According to "The Times"
Google did not register the name Gmail as a trademark quickly enough so 3 other companies have done so, so the name Gmail may have to be scrapped and if it is it might be the case that they will have to abandon the @gmail.com domain and email addresses that have already been allocated. Google letimately owns the "gmail.com" internet name, but it is not clear what will happen if it does not gain the trademark.
Hmmmmm......anyone else got anymore on this? I know quite a few here are now using this

I'm using my Gmail linked with MSN Messenger, and my current ISP's email is shite, so I was about to consider using my GMail as my primary address. I think I'll hold on for a bit.

If the trademark applications were applied for after google started using the gmail.com domain then they have every right to continue using that domain regardless of who holds the trademark of gmail.
It sounds like scare mongering by a journo who doesn't know exactly what they are on about.
