I've only seen parts of doom 3 when being played by a friend, but it seemed pretty boring to me, storywise.
hoping that HL2 will indeed save our lives.
btw, I believe the HL2 hype started a few years ago.. :P

But honestly, those screenshots look awesome. I've always had higher hopes for hl2 than I had for doom3 anyway. Weren't you supposed to be in the test lab half an hour ago?

i've been playing the game slow, i'm only in alpha lab 4, but so far i've been very entertained by doom 3. it's certainly no brainbuster, but it's very pretty, the sound is amazing, it's genuinely creepy and it does a fairly good job of creating an imersive environment.
if half life is as entertaining i'll be a very happy camper.

it's very similar to the original. i mean, you're running around shooting baddies... that's pretty much it. but, it pulls it off pretty well imo. i haven't gotten bored with it yet... but, that's just me of course.
i do wish there were some fully lit, wide open scenes every once in a while though, just to offer some contrast to the dark and claustrophobic feel of the game. i think it'd really make the game feel all the more enclosed and grimey if you walked into a huge, bright area for a while, then went back into the tunnels.

while the "story" may not have been as great as other games, there are 2 facts pertaining to me:
1) no other game has immersed me so much 2) no other game has made me jump or almost kinda "chicken" to go after an ammo pack
3) the visuals are ___explicitive___ awesome 4) the sound adds so much to the immersion.
are you playing with 5.1 or quality headphones?
If you don't like it fine, but that's like someone who listens to techno saying aphex twin sucks.

you said before: "fuck man, i honestly don't see how you guys say this game is so linear and the same levels over and over."
all the scares you describe do not mean it's not linear. neither are a lot of good scares the same as a story - this is what I look for in a good computergame (at least a solo game, to be more explicit).
how is that misinterpreting everything you said to skew it in some form of negation?

the story is extrememly linear. you're given an objective, you complete that objectve, you're given another objective, etc... there's not much room for wandering off that set plot.
there is a story, but it's the same story no matter how you play the game, and there aren't any real plot twists.

Doom 3 is a fantastic game. I can see why Gingah would be disapointed with it (I sort of was... it's not the Game of the Year candidate I thought it'd be), but I can't imagine someone thinking it's boring unless they were expecting the second coming! It's a blast, and a work of art. And though I see Qrter's point about the story (games like this have had good stories before) I disagree with him, you don't NEED story in this kind of game... I don't want it, I get my fill of that stuff elsewhere. I just want to fucking survive here. Fuck characters. The only plot developments I need is a 15 foot demon coming up from behind me and breathing at me in 5.1.
As far as being linear, I don't think that's a problem either. If you want that kind of stuff, play Deus Ex or Thief or something. This is a DIFFERENT kind of experience, I'm tired of it being compared to games that have nothing in common with it.
Doom's getting unfairly maligned... because of the hype. I hope the same thing doesn't happen to Half Life. And Halo. And Fable. And Metal Gear Solid 3. And GTA5. And Silent Hill 4 (which has what I think might be the best soundtrack in history). Or Chaos Theory. Or Killzone. Or Forza.
Too much fucking hype these days... I miss when I used to rent 3 NES games at once purely based on the screenshots and the box art. Now it's all about what has the better bump mapping, normal mappyin, frames per second, the more advanced ragdoll physics system, etc... people just can't seem to accept and enjoy games for what they are. Doom is a straightforward FPS that lives and dies with its ambience, by design.

And the game DOES have some plot, and some neat storytelling touches via PDA... but I have to admit, I never pay attention to things like that. You'll never catch me reading any of the books I pick up in Morrowind, or every E-mail in Deus Ex.

but that's the whole point, I do NEED it in this type of game. just a load of levels exactly stops me from being immersed simply because it feels too much like a platform-game.
nobody is comparing it to other games, it is just stated that this game is linear. and to some people that's not very exciting.
it comes down to personal taste.

Then you'll just have to wait for Half Life, you big stick in the mud... in the meantime, I'll enjoy both of them immensely. ;-p
You make a good point. Yep, it's all personal taste. For me, the linearity and lack of story is the least of this game's problems. It does everything it claims it's there to do... it's sort of the equivalent of a well crafted dumbass action movie to me. Fun as hell, shouldn't be overanalyzed. But if it's not your thing, and if what it offers isn't your dish, well... that sucks. But you should definitely go beyond ''watching your friend play some parts'' and going by ''reviews I've read''. Because although the fighting IS a bit repetitive, and really simple... I just love the visceral feeling of being in that place, in that situation... it's a step forward for video games, presentation-wise.
Gameplay-wise, well... I don't know it this game is going to age too well.

i think by far the biggest accomplishment of doom 3 was to create a new 3d/lighting engine that's going to enable some truly beautiful games to follow.
the engine seems to scale across different systems amazingly nice.

Definitely. Doom's a very nice game, but when they get a better grip on this engine (and others) and start getting a bit more ambitious... we're in for some good shit. I want a Silent Hill game that utilizes this technology. I don't think I'd ever sleep again.
