they're still in a testing period. that means some things might not work correctly, and other things may change drastically. they don't wanna open the flood gates and have people thinking it sucks, when really they're just in the middle of working on it. i think they gave out a schload of invites to lower their value, thus keeping people from selling invitations on ebay, like they were. |

i think it depends where you are in the hierarchy. or maybe you received them but never noticed? there should be a "Invite [some number] friends to Gmail!" on the bottom-left corner. |

the invitations are a hype mechanism--that's why they are coming out again now with the IPO, that's why they are received proportional to gmail usage (that's a strong factor, at least: easily selects great evangelists). |
