the albums with amazing production

layers upon layers upon layers and it almost sounds
organic, you know the ones I'm talking about

aphex - drukqs
sp - ultravisitor
freeform - audiotourism
autechre - draft

they're all done so well that it almost sounds like the
machines are creatures themselves, they all sounds so
organically mechanichal,

are there many other albums out there that have a similar
sound to them? freeform is the only thing I have found that
gets anywhere near the level of production that the others
get to, but surely there has to be more,...

well? any suggestions?

loveless
every bjork album after post
agaetis byrjun
yoshimi battles the pink robots
if you want organic machines, BOC pretty much owns that area

Phoenecia's "brownout" has excellent production too.

as does most of Tricky Dicky Devine's work.

apparently his dingle-dongle is quite impressive, when
dangling.

this is what I've heard on the grapevine.. Impressive Dick
Music indeed!

Phoenecia is a good pick. So is Devine, but sometimes he's
almost too overwhelming.

if you mean loads of layers, in the 1980s five star bought a
64-track recording studio so i guess their music was quite
"organic" - they went bankrupt shortly after, fortunately

Production is the best. I love the crunchiness of Autechre-
Chiastic Slide, the ringingness of The Byrds- Younger than
Yesterday, the janglyness of The Lucksmiths- Where Were We?,
the horniness of Al Kooper- I Stand Alone, the punkiness of
Richard Hell- Blank Generation, and the horrorness of
Hijokaiden- Tapes. And man, Robery Wyatt had some neat
production techniques on his first few broken back albums.

''Gridlock - Trace''

Yeah, that's a good one. I love Gridlock's production, it's
pleasing and sort of messysterile. And Formless, too.

i like the old 'very stereo' production style that was used
in the late 60s when stereo was quite new - drums & bass on
the left channel and vocals & guitar on the right.

drum and bass could be avoided? So primitave repetetative
techno would rule? interesting.

I do too, but only on normal speakers. If I'm wearing
headphones, it tickles when there's an orchestra in one ear
and vocals in the other. Or pinging drums in only one side
of my head. I don't listen to music to feel ''tickled''.

Devine is a good choice, I always hunch over and listen
closely to that guy...

anyway.. as dog_belch mentioned about a week ago, all of
Steve Albini's production work is pretty top-notch.

little gems: pixies - "surfer rosa", pj harvey - "rid of
me"

I was just listening to "in utero" - that also sounds
wonderfully energetic, edgy and roomy after the overly slick
job Butch Vig did on "nevermind".

even the breederseses last "title TK" gets so much energy
from Albini's production alone.

and to top it off, he has written one of the more
interesting 'essays' about the modern music business -
see here.

he does great little things, like suggesting to the pixies
they'd use metal picks on the recordings for "surfer rosa".
