Question for you denizens of the UK.

Do any of you bother with a tv licencse? In my flat there
are five of us, two tvs and not a license between us. All
was well, until we got a letter today from the tv people
saying we have not responded to multiple contacts from them
and we are high on their list of priorities to come round
and bust us if they find we have a tv that is not paid
for.... Can they really take you to court and fine you a
grand? Do they send that nonsense to everyone or should we
be nervous?

In case any of you are curious at all, here is where i live
(in case it makes a differnce). We live on the top floor
above a bank - can the tv nazis just bust in and check if
there is a tv or not? Its a pretty solid bank door - can we
barricade them out?

Anyone know about this kind of stuff?

More worryingly one of my flatmates is suggesting we get rid
of the tvs rather than get a license. Madness!

The License isn't rreally to own a TV, it's to pay forr BBC
1 and BBC 2, as upsetting as it is knowing that shows like
'My Family' is wherre yourr money is being spent, you must
pay it.

nobody likes a pedant but the scary letter we got today says
blind people get a 50% concession- which would be £60.50

No wont kill me but most of my flatmates are starving artist
types who can live for about 3 months on £25. Hence the
suggestion we get rid of TV rather than buy license.

penthouse apartment in london you can afford a tv license

I know i just object to paying more money for crap services
we get in this coutnry.

TIme to go back to japan where sales tax is 5%, income tax
is 9%, nobody ever pays their TV license fee and everthing
works like it is supposed to.

Except the country is bancrupt.

back when i lived in london wich wasn't that long ago i
remember reading the back of my receipt thingy or whatever
it was and laughing at the (at the time) really naff
reduction for the blind, who apparently must listen to a lot
of radio. it was NEVER 60 quid.

Honest guv it says on the back of my bill:

"If you are registered blind you will qualify for a 50%
concession on your TV license".

Although this is fuck all help if you ARE blind as you
wouldnt be able to read it so would have no clue you could
get a discount. And if you shared your flat with a non
blind person you probably wouldnt get the discount anyway.

Wankers.

I don't pay my tv license... I live in a dorm so I can watch
tv "for free / legally" out in the dorm, if I want to.
But I do have a tv in my own room aswell.

I'd love to be a starving artist, I mean to be an artist
that can atleast try (even if I don't succeed) to make a
living on doing things I like. that'd be an adventure
atleast.
Also, of course, I'd love to go to Tokyo, but that's not
really the issue here...
In Sweden you also have to pay the TV-License (it's a
tv/radio-license in one), for having a tv, and the money is
used for 1) paying for the state (non-commercial) tv 2)
funding the TV/Radio Service (the organisation you pay money
to) --- and perhaps something else.
