Predator (1987)

Alien vs Predator was such a disapointment, that I promptly
made some popcorn, fired up the bigscreen, turned off the
lights, took off my pants and put on Predator (1987) to numb
the pain. It has so many things going for it-

1- Arnie at the top of his game- he's ripped as hell, has
that military spikey hairdo, spits out the stupidest,
awesomest one-liners with aplomb, and totally fucks up the
Predator's shit. Seriously, he's a presence here, right from
his first scene. My favorite Arnold role.

2- beautiful scenery. Get this DVD spinning hot, progressive
scan, and you can breathe in the moisture and heat. I think
trudging around in a forest like that holding a fucking
gatling gun is everybody's dream. Big tough guys, boxed in
by a bigger, tougher environment.

3- 95% of the time in action movies, when it's building to
the climax, I'm pretty bored in spite of the onscreen
mayhem. Most of the time I've had my fill of violence and
quirky quips by the time the first 75 minutes are through
... but not here. The last 20-25 minutes are intense and
primal.

4- Arnie at the top of his game- he's ripped as hell, has
that military spikey hairdo, spits out the stupidest,
awesomest one-liners with aplomb, and totally fucks up the
Predator's shit. Seriously, he's a presence here, right from
his first scene. My favorite Arnold role.

5- Alan Silvestri's score- riveting strings and brass. The
commandos and the Predator's respective fucking ups are
intensified by that music. And I love when the camera is
sweeping through the jungle... symbiotic relationship
between the action/drama (drama?) and the sound.

Who likes Predator? I expect some hearty ''fuck yeahs'' and
a few simple 5 line sentences saying it sucks.

And what do you think of Predator 2? From Arnold at the
height of his powers, to Danny Glover... uhhh... and I
partially blame them, because that Alien skull in the trophy
room had something to do with AVP!

Don't ask me what a 5 line sentence is... I just don't know
anymore.

When they eradicate a few acres of rainforest with 5 metric
tons of bullets, that's awesome.

Yeah, the Predator is pretty darn slick. Hasn't dated much
at all... though one my my only qualms with the film is that
they don't show enough of him... that invisible suit sure is
a convenient way to avoid filming potentially unconvincing
shots of a 7'2'' guy jumping around in rubber.

AvP hasn't come out here yet, but i'm only going to watch it
to rip the shit out of the plotline and stuff

I don't think I have! Got any pics? Is it in the special
features or anything?

I read that it was supposed to have a long neck, a dog's
head, and one eye... and at one point, pint sized Jean
Claude Van Damme was going to play him.

no unfortunately i don't have pics :( i haven't reinstalled
all the stuff on my Mac, so i can't screen grab from my DVD

but yeah, it had some fucked up head, long neck, one eye

it's hilarious!

another thing i love about Predator - it was made during a
time when the film that was used to record the movies had a
grain, quite a distinctive grain.
i LOVE grain in films. Terminator, Aliens, Predator....all
good examples of grain in a movie which give character to
it.

well in my opinion it does.

it's a shame that everything is so digital nowadays

"got time to duck?"

Agreed. It adds some ''warmth'' to it... or something to
that effect. Makes a great looking movie look even sweeter.

Speaking of the '80s, Tremors is on TBS right now... but I
can't watch it, there's music to be absorbed. I've seen it
about 10 times, anyway. For some reason, I really like
Michael Gross... Family Ties was nice.

"it's a shame that everything is so digital nowadays"

so true, hach the good old times =)

and to the second part - it could have been worse - the sex
scene at the beginning and the mortal kombat move in the
subs are gorgeous :D

Ophecks

Tremors is cool, haven't seen that for a few years - love
the big shootout on that thing!

Sepix

what mortal kombat move? remembering that Predator 2 came
out before Mortal Kombat did

either way, Predator created the hand-held minigun.....if it
wasn't for Predator, there'd be no minigun in Terminator 2,
no chaingun in DOOM, no chaingun in Quake II / III Arena

The same twit (forgot his generic name at the moment) that
directed AVP and the horrible Resident Evil movie, did
Mortal Kombat... I think it's from '94. Christopher Lambert
as Raiden.

I saw it in theatres, and thought it was pretty darn cool!
But I was 10... the fight scenes were pretty hectic, a high
punch/kick-per-second rate. I'll have to download it
sometime and see if it's as cool as I remember.

Way better than the Street Fighter movie. What a bad way for
Raul Julia to end his career, heh...

yeah i know that Paul Anderson did MK, and he did Resident
Evil (which is why i shall NEVER see that film)

I too, saw it when i was 10, at the cinema (lucky i passed
for 15!) and at the time, because I was into Power Rangers,
i fucking loved it. Oh yeah, i also loved it because i was
into the game majorly, but anyways....trust me - it's NOT as
good as you remember it was!

It might not be as GOOD as I remember it, but maybe it'll
still be cool...

Nah.

Well at least I remember Kitana and Mileena having some nice
legs, and Scorpion's spear having a neat organic special
effect. That's something to look forward to.

i think maybe you'll laugh at it nowadays mate ;)

so tell me - is Lance Henrikson really in AvP?

because branches still give off a temperature reading

Hey Predator 2 ain't all that bad either.
It got some cool scenes like the one where the predator
throws the razor disc in the meat factory thru like seven
cows before beheading the badguy.
And it got a classic line spoken by the Jamaican gangster
that me and my friends like to quote whenever theres a money
issue.

"This is not abot money.....it is abot POWAAA!!!"

(Patwa accent)

Agreed that the first is the best tho.
It was very cool the first time i saw it. The tape was just
leing around at my home and i poped it in the vcr , "Oh cool
, a war movie" i thought and had no idea there was gona
contain a big fucking alien that was sorta a mix betwen Boba
Fet and Pumba from the lion king. The surprice hightened my
experience.
