ehm.. I don't have any education in music, but I'd like to know if there are any rules to song-structure.. I usually just do what I feel like when introducing new themes and such, and I can't help but think that it could be "wrong"... I know of other artists that were really good, but they were also missing something, and suddenly, when they got signed they had to change their song-structure because some executive or professional said so...

what you are doing is completely correct - use your intuition and follow no rules.
the reason labels try to make artists change their song-structure is generally to make it more commercial or "appealing to wider audiences" by following guidelines depending on the type of music. pop music, for instance, usually follows a verse-chorus-verse pattern. the reason they follow guidelines is because that's what traditional pop and rock music did in the early days of commercial music, and why change a winning formula that has been embraced by the consumer masses who are by now programmed to accept these formulas?

that's just what i was gonna say...
...as long as it sounds good...to you. that should be why you're making music, for yourself. and if you're extra special, other people will like it too.

i have been thinking the same thing lately.. my music/sound tech teatcher forces me to make music that has the typical pop structure.. and i hate it =D
it's pretty boring and as said above it's only like guide lines so when someone gives it a first listen they will know exactly when the chorus will hit in even thou they never heard the song before.
im fed up with the rules of music and sound, im debating with my teatcher quite allot when it comes to different rules like chords and harmony rules and so on.. i think the older generation of musicisians and sound dudes are very closed minded (like open minded but the other way eh)
and closed mindedness wont take music to any new levels at all..
this doesnt mean that learning about music and production techniques are a bad thing just try to keep in mind that rules are made to be broken and allways follow the ear+heart instead of someone elses ways of doing things (even if it's a super duper star producer)
good day

I've thought a lot about this too and I don't disagree with the "if it sounds good then do it" idea. But when considering harmony, you can't just chuck it out the window completley, If something sounds good then it's probably already been known for a while.
However, new things can be discovered but it's easier to try new ideas when you have knowledge of what has already been thought out. I feel like rules should be learned before they're broken.
I think what you're doing is correct though, in terms of song structure, it's wide open nowadays.

It's Anthony Braxton. I'd advise you to start from the beginning of his discography, they're some real gems all through his career though.

Nothing I love more than a well written pop song, of standard structure. The bridge is so often the key. I like symmetry and order.

yeah.. I know about that "if it sounds good.." and all that, but most of the time, when I play it to other peolpe, I realize it only sounds good to me, 'cause they go "ah, you should change it there, and that part is too long" and stuff like that, and people react at the same places 95% of the time.. I have, however, been making more experimental stuff lately, and then people just don't seem to care about song-structure...

that just further proves my theory that i explained in the above post. most people are used to hearing things a certain way, but you must do what you think is best for your art and stay true to yourself, even if it isn't what people expect.
