If there is anyone that knows anything about laptops help
would be very much appreciated.

My brother has lent me a laptop to try and sort out and uh..
for some reason it won't read CDs. This is the only problem
with it. Every time I/we put in a CD it makes a few noises
but tells me the drive is empty.

Herlp!

if the laptop has a hot-swapable drive bay, you'll be sorted
because you can get a replacement easily

Can't reinstall anything if it can't read CDs

you shouldn't need drivers

a cd drive is a cd drive

windows has a standard ATAPI cd drive, which WILL work with
all optical media drives

or at least windows will have the drivers

laptops are weird when it comes to drivers...i had quite a
bit of trouble reinstalling everything...it wouldn't
surprise me if cd drive would need driver.

My modem is not yet installed so...

zguru: I've looked.. they're not. They're on CDs that came
with the laptop but the laptop won't read them!

but it wont need one though, because as said, windows will
have standard drivers for optical drives

and if they do, then laptops use some FUCKED up optical
drives
