open or closed headphones?

iv posted this topic at watmm but i'll also post it here
to.

I’ve looked into the subject a bit and discovered the
majority of people say open headphones are better than
closed because they radiate noise out from the earpieces and
give a more natural wider sound, improving sonic
performance. They say closed headphones aren’t as good
because the sealed chamber creates resonance which disturbs
the acoustic performance and makes the music sound boxed in.
Iv been looking into buying a new set of headphones and this
advice sounded great to me, so last Friday I went and bought
a pair of Grado Alessandro MS-1's which are said to be one
of the finest open headphones one can buy. I’ve given
these new open headphones a good listen but honestly they
sound weird and un-natural to me. Sure the sound quality is
better and they give tones more detail, but I’ve always
listened to music through sealed cans and am used to the in
your head sound. Lucky for me the store I bought them from
have a 20 day trial period which permits me to return them
for store credit if I’m not happy. So tomorrow I’m
thinking i might go swap them for a set of sealed cans
instead. Has anyone else been through a similar transition
from sealed to unsealed and discover any discomfort?

open headphones on a train, closed if you're on your own

the picture below shows the Grado Alessandro MS-1's........

if i do decide to swap them for a sealed pair, then it will
be a decision between the following three

Beyerdynamic DT770pro
Sennheiser HD280pro
Beyerdynamic DT250

It all depends of where you go with your headphones. Trust
me, I love Grado Labs. and they are the company that my ears
listen to music. But if I go on the road, the
open-headphones don't appreciate the sound-level of our
everyday urban lives (heck, even rural). They are best
used, in a closed environment like, your house. Not on the
road, or while riding the bus/subway.

But trust me, open headphones = TEH QUALITY, especially
Grado Labs. Don't forgot to buy a portable amp!

WITNESS!

Had them for about a year and they sound perfect everywhere.
Not the most comfortable by a long short, and I haven't got
a clue if they are open or not, but they are ace
none-the-less.

if it is for homelistening only I recommend you the
senheiser HD 590

I can wear them for hours without feeling pressure on my
ears, I don´t have to describe the sound because with
senheiser you know what you get
