live laptop sets - need help

did anyone ever do a live set making music on a laptop ever
? i want to get started with these things, and i want to buy
a laptop asap.

i played a bit with ableton, and i like it very much
especially the new version with midi rolls - nothing better
then creating own melodies live.

but ableton seems very "loopy" for me - like just created
for club music.

so i thought - is it possible to play live from floops or
reason ? how ?? anyone done it ? maybe someone can answer me
some more questions then !!

yet another question - what to buy ? amd, celeron or p 3/4
??

i can get a p3 1700 mhz and a celeron 2200 mhz for the same
money... so what should i choose ??

I would go for the p3. Celerons aren't a good alternative
these days IMO. Personally I would get an AMD model, I find
them better value.

I just wrote this as an answer to your question in the other
thead, but I'll write it here as well:

for pc laptops, you should get a centrino processor.. that
is the laptop processor, and all the other processors can't

run at their full capacity (a 3ghz pentium would NEVER run
at 3ghz) because of the heat.

You don't need an internal soundcard, as laptop-soundcards
suck.. you'll have to get an external one (M-audio firewire

401 is apparently pretty good, but if you have money there
are many better ones!).

i´m planning the same thing.

decision clear:

ableton live 4

G4 powerbook 15" superdrive (1.5 GHz, minimum 1GB ram)

a midi controller box (propably a cheap one by dopefer)

and: you will definitely need an external audio device. i´m
not sure yet if i get the m-audio firewire 410 interface or
rme hammerfall multiface... the second one is sounding much
better and has almost no latency for it runs with pci
cardbus (it´s pretty expensive, though...).

i do not know what kind music you plan to perform, but
ableton is as well a very nice software for doing ambient /
drone stuff .

i think that when i bought all this, i won´t be able to
afford food for years... so what.

I recommend you this: G4 PowerBook 17"

what I really recommend: HARDWARE! You'll even get a
better stage-show!!!

i´ve done that for years and at the moment i am a bit
pissed by the limitations (i had completely analogue gear on
stage, every synth doing a single sound blabla...). so i´m
about to try the alternative, best would be mixing both
technologies, e.g. the described setup with my good old
sh101 added.

and: with a 8 out - interface, you can route the signals to
a conventional mixer and then fuck them up wit any sorts of
shitty effect pedals etc.

I'm talking live sampling and stuff like that... not just
sequencers and lots of synths...

okay, i don´t have experience with that. sampling bores me
to death.

it's not that kind of sampling.. you have with you, on
stage, a piano, a drum-set, a guitar.. whatever you feel
like + a sampler, and then you play one thing and create a
small loop. You then play another thing on top of it while
possibly using an fx-pedal to alter the thing you recorded
earlier (separate fx-loops per sample on the sampler is
necessary...), and then you create an entire song before the
audience's very eyes! You may even include them in the song
(have them shout or sing something.. or clap.. audiences are
good at clapping...)! That's a pretty good stage-show as
opposed to a guy, hovering over a laptop, doing things you
can't see...

hmm...

yes, there is a complete liveset from 2003 to be found here.

you can as well watch this video documentation showing a typical live setup.
(watch out, filesize 280mb, but worth watching - nice
atmosphere).

i´m appearing there as one half of PARACHUTE.

like that?!

not my cup of tea, anyway...
