funny movie. basically just a series of character sketches,
no real plot, and weird as hell. but hilarious. anyone else
seen it?

What did you do last summer again?
I told you! I spent it with my uncle in Alaska hunting
wolverines!
Did you shoot any?
Yeah, like, fifty of them! They were surrounding my cousin!
What the heck would you do in a situation like that?
What kind of gun did you use?
A friggin' twelve gauge, what do you think?

GOSH!!

Heck yes! I'd vote for you.

Like what are my skills?

Well, you have a sweet bike. And you're really good at
hooking up with chicks. Plus you're like the only guy at
school who has a mustache.

The Ebert review of this film really shows how out of touch
with popular culture Ebert has become. Especially his
comment at the end of his review:

I'm told the movie was greeted at Sundance with lots of
laughter, but then Sundance audiences are concerned with
being cool, and to sit through this film in depressed
silence would not be cool, however urgently it might be
appropriate.

I guess he is suggesting that people only laugh at this film
so that other people will think they are 'cool.'

I found it interesting to read his review of Napoleon Dynamite
and then read his review of Forrest Gump a film he called
magical.

Personally I find Napoleon more lovable and real than
Forrest. 'Forrest Gump' becomes a kind of preachy, WWJD?,
kind of picture supposing that even a retarded man can
overcome life's challenges if he is white and christian. On
the other hand 'Napoleon Dynamite' proposes that life's
challenges (real, everyday challenges mind you) are
surmountable, even by a social retard. Though he is
pathetic, he is not vulnerable. If he cares about
something, Napoleon uses his 'skills' to overcome the
challenge. Napoleon also understands loyalty and
friendship and he does not judge the people that are quick
to judge him. In some ways Forrest has these qualities,
but again, nobody can believe Forrest could exist.
Conversly, everybody knows a 'Napoleon Dynamite' and most of
us know what it's like to feel like a 'Napoleon Dynamite.'

ya so, thats a lot of writing i guess but i'm at work with
nothing to do!

Anyway, I like it Well Much.

This movie was great;

"I see your drinking skim milk... is that cause you think
your fat? Cause your not. You could prolly drink whole milk
if you want to."

Best pickup line in existence.

my friend brought this over on dvd...

i just didn't think it wasn't anything so great. yes, it
was very funny at times, subtle... it really made me laugh
a few times... but as a movie, it doesn't hold up.

it's just a bunch of people doing characters (although they
do a very good job) in sketches. it's a series of sketches.
it should have been a tv show or something. it's way too
long to be a movie - at times i was bored by it... and i
didn't think the main character was particularly funny or
even very likeable. i liked the other characters a lot
more.

as for the popularity with hipsters (and yes, i do think
that they intentionally pandered to this demographic) - it's
obvious to me what they have co-opted... rushmore. the
opening credits, the music, and even the design on the
packaging are all homages to rushmore (which is one one of
my favorite movies ever and i consider ND to be not even in
the same ballpark as rushmore in terms of quality or humor).
there's a lot of borrowed aesthetic... but where rushmore
is actually a cohesive, well-made film, napoleon dynamite is
not.

i liked this movie a lot more when it was called beavis and
butthead. ;)

i was hoping this movie would be better... i didn't dig the
"overcoming obstacles in life here's the moral of the story"
bullshit. i don't think that gave it any depth. not that a
comedy needs depth, but i'm just saying it lacked it.

ps - don't get mad at me - i do still think it was funny.
i'm not trying to offend anyone. i think it's worth seeing
this movie for a laugh...

ND was hillarious. people are pissed because because they
didn't get it or think it was funny and a ton of other
people do. i think it's all a matter of taste, really.

that's not at all what i said. lots of people liked it. i
liked it and i'm not a hipster... what i said was that a
lot of hipsters like it. and that statement is based on
personal observations and experiences.

i'm just pointing out that regardless of the target demo, it
appeals to a very wide audience, i wasn't making a pointed
statement necesarily.

i think it's interesting that you mention Bevis and
Butthead. I agree it is very similar humor. just less
vulgar. but the characters have that same awkward cuteness
that makes them so lovable.

i agree it's no rushmore, and i definitely see the influence
rushmore had on ND. but as for cohesiveness, i don't think
it was supposed to have much of a traditional story arc. I
think it is more like a retarded Norman Rockwell painting.
showing some small town folk, in a small town highschool,
with small town obstacles in their paths. in that way, it
is a coming of age story like rushmore, but perhaps a little
more honest and adorable.

i wouldn't say it was better than Rushmore, but i still
love it!

actually, to be honest, i'm not even sure what a hipster is.
except for, like, that Seinfeld episode, where Cramer's
girlfriend calls him a "Hipster Dufus!"
