Although not an owner of an mp3-player i've always been a fan of them. My favourite, until now, had been the Rio Karma, which boosted many nice features that the iPod didn't have; better sound quality, 15 hours of battery time against iPod's 8, playlist features, and many other minor things. My friend is in the USA at the moment and I wanted him to buy me a Rio Karma. But just before I told him I was sure I wanted one, Apple releases the 4. generation iPods... ...And now I'm 100% percent sure what to get. They've upgraded the battery time from 8 to 12, you can now make playlists with out a cpu, some shuffle features and the option to slow down or speed up audiobooks. Just letting people know in case someone wasn't aware of the new iPod and wondering if anyone has got one or is planning on getting one. The 20gb version costs 299$ and the 40gb version 399$. Atli |

i've heard they made the battery even more impossible to replace. that's a big turnoff for me. i totally dig the way they look and function, but i'm worried that the battery will quit holding a charge after a year or two... which wouldn't be a problem for most other mp3 players, you'd just get a new battery. why did apple decide to make it so fucking difficult? |

In most cases you'd be able to get a new battery for about $40. What's the deal with the iPod's battery then? |

i've heard that this time it's almost inseperable from the scrollwheel, meaning, you can't replace it. sorry, i don't have a link so this could be complete bs. but, i heard some people talking about it on another forum. |

i ordered mine the week it was released, in my opinion the 4th gen ipod is pretty much perfect. The click wheel is the best UI in any mp3 player and battery life is excelent now, software is faster, plus it looks like a work of art :) I'm guessing the battery will be replacable, i can't imagine apple making them so they aren't after the complaints they had with older ones. It might be more difficult but i'm betting it will be possible. Besides the batteries last 3 years at least, i've got a 2nd gen ipod that has lasted a long time without the battery dying on me. |

I just think some people are a little too paranoid because of problems before with ipods, not that i've ever had a problem. |

Got to admit that $299 for 20GB is very doable, but I'd want to know if there's any catch before I'd actually buy one. |

the only catch is that you don't get the dock, case or remote. All of which are pretty much a wasted of space anyway. Well, apart from the dock which looks nice. |

I'm in desperate need of an iPod although I have no money. I've got almost 50GB of AAC's and mp3's (almost 2/3 of that I bought on CD) so I wouldn't mind getting a 60GB model but Apple say there aren't even plans to make one! Anyone think it's anything to do with a drunk executive from Toshiba (was it them? can't remember) telling someone that they'd signed a contract with Apple (who seem to be the most secret company out there) to sell them a load of 60GB small harddrives? 4 years ago when ATI said that they were "supplying Apple with graphics cards for THREE of their desktop models" Apple decided not to include their graphics cards for a while. [At the time there were only PowerMacs and iMacs, the THIRD one being the at-the-time unannounced and unheard of Cube, which of course is now dead, r.i.p.] |

I think in about a year they'll have a 60Gb iPod. The average person really doesn't need that space but if Apple were to include some sort of Video or photograph ability to the iPod they could justify the size. Also there are some rumors that there are features in the new 4g iPods that have not been "activated". I'm interested to see what the new iMacs are all about. I have a feeling they'll have some nicenew technology that fits in with the iPod. |

It is typical of apple that you cannot replace it yourself. I saw a TV program the other night, (which was fairly awful in its testing of mac vs pc), but when they were both dropped from a great height, the pc motherboard could be replaced with a bought one for £65. The mac motherboard could not be purchased and had to be sent to a service centre for £400. -->Apple policy is not to sell parts to end users. Bear that in mind when your Ipod battery stops retaining a usefull charge. |

i think i will settle with 192kbps but 224kbps sounds nice too. |

liisten to the original cd and then listen to 128 kbps, if you have decent earphones there is a clear difference. |

there is an ipod battery replacement programme and I think the same will happen for the new ipods. its no big deal, no rechargable battery lasts forever. |

well most of my ripped cd's are 192 kbps but i'm going to ripp my favourite albums and ones with a lot of layers in a higher bit rate (yeah, i'm picky). I've got 40GB space in my ipod so all my music should fit easily. |

no but from what I have heard is that on other brands it is a standard format battery, which is easy to put in/take out. I have been told that ipods are difficult to get the battery out of. That the batterys are held in with soldered connections deep inside. Now that wouldnt be a problem for me to open it up, but joe public or whatever kicks up a fuss. N.B. this is what I have heard from various people. I'm not up on mp3 players.I dont really care for mp3 players. I have never owned ANY portable music things other than a transistor radio. I prefer vinyl records, and listening to the world when im out and about. |

That's it. I've got 50GB of 128kbps AACs (not mp3's, there's a big difference between 128 mp3 and 128 aac) so if I encode it higher my iBook won't take anymore. |
