hmm. i had a strange experience tonight and i want to share it with you all in the hope that you can explain it.
i turned on a light in my house and the bulb went (making that "popping" sound that they make as they go), however, it was closely followed by a slightly louder "thud".
i went to look at the bulb, and it had actually fallen out of the socket and was lying in the lightshade. on closer inspection i found that only the glass part of the bulb had fallen, the bulbs innards and the metal part remained in the socket. the glass part had literally come away from the metal part (there was a little bit of glass still on the metal part). and there was a bit of smoke coming out of the glass bulb.
now, has that ever happened to anyone else? and does anybody know what might have caused it?
and perhaps the most important question of all: did anybody find that story the remotest bit interesting?

After close analysis of your account I have come to the conclusion that your lightbulb has indeed, exploded.

How long had the light been on? Intense heat weakens the glue binding the bulb to the metal component. Perhaps the glue had softened on account of the light being left on and it was barely hanging in place untill the wick finally popped and the vibration shook the bulb just enough to have it fall out.

Aha! Those are good theories, but can't be right, for two reasons:
1. The light had only just been switched on, for the first time that day.
2. The glue binding metal to glass hadn't melted - glass was left behind on the metal component. Somehow, the glass had cracked away from the metal component, but in a really clean way. It was almost as though someone had used some kind of cutting tool to slice through the glass.
Very strange it was. I haven't slept properly since it happened.

fatigue perhaps? something similar happened to me a couple of years ago. but it was the plastic socket that holds the buld that fractured clean and fell to the floor on evening when i switched it on.
i can only assume that this kind of damage builds up over time.. the surge of power when you first complete the circuit must be enough to push the glass/plastic over the edge.
