He is excellent live. I've heard him refer to his music as bastardized jazz. As far as I know he only uses samplers to make his tracks.

He's freaking amazing. Overlooked sometimes I feel, but a lot of people don't like jazz orientated stuff, but I hate them so y'know.
My favourite by him is Permutation, and I think I'm alone on this.

I think his latest two albums shit all over everything else he's done, but, in the same way I like early afx, I can see why people would like his earlier stuff..

I prefer Bricolage and Permutation to Supermodified and Out From Out Where.
But let's just call it.. 'taste'.

I didn't like Out from Out Where much at all. Really boring, homogenous sounds. Supermodified is definitely my favorite, though I think everything he did up to '01 was mindbendingly good.
He's doing the soundtrack to Splinter Cell 3! Ubisoft Montreal + Amon Tobin = splooge.

supermodified is quite good, but it sounds a lot like big beat dressed up to be hipper. get permutation instead for messed up jazz and out from out where cos it's totally fucking awesome electronica.

cheesy? why, 'cos it's so much like stuff that's been done so many times before by so many other people, and he uses such obvious melodies and beats? i see your point.

amon tobin...lemme fill you in!!!
His first record was released under the monkier "Cujo" for Nine Bar Records, and the album was called "Adventures in Foam".
The "Ninja Tune" crew heard of Amon Tobin thu early 12" releases he put for Nine Bar... eventually the label got shut down and Ninjas signed him.
The result of getting into Ninja Tune rooster was the release of "Bricolage" in 1997.
Followup to "Bricolage" was permutation, which was obviously a bit darker and nontheless rhythmical.
After "Permutation", he releases "Supermodified" which is a step further in his regular production work.
His creativity was nicely shown when he opted to collaborate with artists such as "Chris Morris" and the canadian beatbox guru "Quadraceptor".
After the release of the previous two (Permutaion and Supermodified), he puts out "Out From Outwhere"...even darker and rhyrhmicly complex than the two predcessors.
With the release of "Out From Outwhere" he prooved the audience to be one of the most inventive producers in the electronic world of today, imo!!!
Fact 1: amon tobin doesn't use synths...only a sampler and a wavelab editor.
Fact 2: the complex drum loops he has in his tracks are usully cutups from salsa or jazz music.
Fact 3: I love his music
