women and men and electronic music

I dislike to talk about women or men as a group... but, why
is it that VERY few women find e.g. music on their own?
What I mean is that (according to my experience) most women
who listen to experimental electronic music began doing so
after a male* friend of theirs introduced them to the genre
(or some artists of the genre).

* or female, but that seems to be more rare

ah, sorry if this seems like generalizing and stuff, but do
you know what I mean?

comments are appriciated.

yes, I know exactly what you mean.. it's almost like women
doesn't even like music sometimes... I've never
talked to a girl in real-life that has any preferences in
music.. they say that if they don't like it, they tune it
out...

as men are.

i think its the difference of 'passive listener' and 'active
listener'

most girls i know hardly even listen to music, its more of a
background thing to them. None of the girls i know would
ever sit down and listen to an album and really listen to
it.

i've never seen a woman concentrate on music. they usually
leave it in the background. experimental music requires more
attention than that to get into.

I absolutely haven't a clue why this is the case, but i
often wonder about it too. I've given squarepusher and boc
tracks on cd to a few girls i know and they liked them a
lot, but not enough to get really carried away about.

it all boils down to evolution (or what ever)......some
‘men’ originally were and still are hunters and have in
the back of heads to hunt things down...ie animals, money,
music, TV channels and women

‘Some’ females don’t feel the urge to hunt things
down, they rely on the male to do it for them

I was watching some shit on discovery channel the other
night about this crap which sadly stuck in my brain.....

please dont hurt me pOgO

Girls who I've met don't listen to experimental kinds of
music, Some liked Clouddead when I put that on the once.
I've never really met a girl who is absorbed by music the
way in which some men are. Shame.

offline polygon_ring from somewhere else on 2004-07-26 13:33 [#01286888]

i suppose most girls just listen. they never feel the music
nor think about it.

Yeah, the girl I play a lot of different stuff to only ever
'likes' the stuff, occasionally with easier going stuff
she'll really enjoy it. But there is a definite lack of
enthusiasm.

..and now, one of the girls on the board will come and say
"that's not true!!!," but with all this empiric evidence
gathered from throughout the world, how can you argue?!

I'll get off this fucking internet-shit now! Time to
DO something!

I agree with the majority of opinions here. I see it myself
all the time. Women never seem to 'feel' music like I do and
other guys do. Like I play stuff to my friends (the female
ones) and they only seem to comment on the track as a whole
and stuff and how they just like it or don't like it. I get
completely absorbed in music and I listen to everything that
goes on in music. This is why I can't stand the type of
dance music my sister likes (you know, the type). I mainly
like the music I like because of the way it makes me feel.
Unlike many women i'd imagine. Wow this sounds sexist.

Heh, this thread reminds me of being really drunk and
playing a female friend the venetian snares remix of
"skelechairs" really loud, and having no idea why she didn't
think it was the best thing ever.

I'd say that all of my girl friends over the years, were
enthusiastic, and loved music just as much as any of my guy
friends did.

And I think that all of the women at my school would beg to
differ as well.

I think you guys are confusing the fact that not many people
listen to electronic music, with, no girls listen to
electronic music (because people in general do not) and
therefor you assume that no women like music (by your thin
definition of the word).

Maybe they don't like music that is good enough for your
guys tastes, but don't you dare say they aren't feeling the
music they listen to.

I don't know any girls that are hardcore into music. Then
again, I don't know many girls. Hra! Hra! Hra! But even the
girls in my college classes, their ''depth'' of knowledge
seemed to extend down to, say, Pavement or (The) Pixies, and
end there.

Pretty much the only contact I have with people that share
my tastes in 'sic is conducted through wires. And most of
them are males. Most of YOU are males. Smelly ugly males.

*yawn*

mabbe i should start a topic about the misconceptions men
have of women... just the other day, a good male friend of
mine said that women want to be 'won over' and another good
male friend of mine about ten years ago that women couldn't
hold their pee.

i, for one, quite enjoy electronic music, have for about a
decade, and would credit my musical interests to both my
friends' influence (female and male) and my own personal gut
response to music.
