hello.

i will be in berlin from july 30th to august 4th.

please, german members, post links to internet sites that
either list cool places to go (off the beaten track, not
tourist guidebook stuff), concert listings, clubs, special
events, exhibitions, etc. -- preferably, of course, in
english but german is okay too.

would be much much much appreciated!

the berlin wall was a barrier that divided one people (the
germans) that were previously one nation. it was
superficially imposed by foreign powers that were not on
either side of the fence except in claim. it was imposed to
protect ideological stronghold on the respective side. there
was no previous history of extreme hatred between the two
sides (east and west germany) and of violence particularly
targeting each other.

the wall in israel/palestine divides two people (israeli and
palestinians) that are, historically, two nations. it was
imposed by israel as a measure of protecting itself.
there is long standing animosity amongst the two groups.

people in israel are sick of living in fear of suicide
bombings -- they're sick of having to eye everyone
suspiciously on a bus because they might blow themselves up.
however misguided their effort, they're trying to protect
themselves.

terrorist incidents in the northern part of israel, where
the wall has already been completed, have dropped to next to
nothing. if the wall continues to work, it might convince
the israeli public that the occupation is not neccessary and
the palestinians can enjoy true autonomy in their country.

i have a lot of problems with the walls -- i think it makes
it difficult for palestinians to reach hospitals and
education -- and i think, at the very least, its path ought
to change. so far, the israeli supreme court has yielded to
the appeal of palestinian citizens more than once and has
agreed to change the path of the wall.

it's a bunch of fashionable claptrap, this german/israel
comparison. i don't agree with the israeli occupation of
palestine, but at the same time i have no sympathy for
ill-informed slogans that are exchanged like so much pop
culture humor. people are dying over here on a daily basis.
if you are so genuinely concerned by either palestinian
assaults on israeli civilians, which i am, or israeli
brutality in its treatment of palestinians, which i am also,
then go ahead and act.

there are plenty of things to do. i was at a checkpoint
protesting ill treatment of palestinians earlier this week,
and monitoring israeli soldiers so they treat palestinians
better. if you are genuinely concerned, by all means act. i
can help direct you to an organization that mirrors your
particular ideas. it's this messageboard snickering i can't
stand. joke about something else.

you went too far.

I agree 100% with you

what I meant is that in a very supeficial view of the
problem, its like the same stupid thing: lets separate
families with a wall!

of course the circumstances are diferent, but the solution
is the same... and I think crazone just made a fun remarc
about that.

but again, I think your deeper look on the matter reveals
how diferent the two cases are

well, thanks for the patience and for reading it through.. i
get a little upset by these things. i'm in israel right now
and things are pretty heated all around. well, anyways..
you're right about me taking it too seriously... so there.
