if you're not using a lot of programmes concerning making
music and/or animation (and I mean professionally), it's
probably cheaper to get a good pc-laptop.

also an easier choice if you want to play games.

i hear that some linux distros have lots of problems with
things such as standby/sleep mode.

the ibook is the cheapest option. i just don't know what i
would do with 3Ghz of processor power that the new pc
laptops have. also 'light' and 'small' are things that an
ibook would provide.

i don't play lots of games on my pc :/

what you would do with 3Ghz is not having to get a new
laptop very soon..

I have a PowerBook G4 17". It really is faultless after one
years use. Being able to open upa terminal and be in UNIX
mode is a really powerfull experience adn a defiante plus
from the old OS9 days.

I bought a 14" iBook for my dad recently. You can get a
dudey-deal by where for a few extra pennies they throw a bag
and airport card if you are a student. The iBook is a really
nice machine but you can tell it is not for pro use,
everything is a little bit more rugged and clunky. Try one
out at a local store and see if you like the feel.

I would say wait and see what type of computers your school
uses.

if they are teaching all the stuff on macs, and you get a PC
(or vice versa), it could be a little bit of a problem no?

when I got into school, I visited the campus and saw that
is was ALL macs. so I got a mac, figuring it would be easier
to work with and go back and forth from home computer to
school computer. and I was right!

so check out what the school uses...

pc=cheap and good.
mac=expensive and good.

I'd say go with PC unless you have a specific reason to get
a mac. but PC's can do just about anything a mac can do at
like half the price of hardware/software.

with 256mt of ram i can't really make so much music. plus bf
has m-audio external card - i can use that :)

yeah, but the ozone isn't only a card.. it's that
midi-controller.. the mini-keyboard-ish thing.. and with
external soundcards you don't need that much ram, 'cause
they do a bit of the heavy lifting...

(I make music on a PII 266mhz with 95mb ram and 4gb HD (I
haven't got money to spend on a new computer.. it goes into
other things(I'm going to go over to strictly hardware.. got
a synth, got a turntable, getting a mixer and getting a zoom
portastudio-thingie (either MRS1266 or MRS1806)))... it
sucks, but it works)

for pc laptops, you should get a centrino processor.. that
is the laptop processor, and all the other processors can't
run at their full capacity (a 3ghz pentium would NEVER run
at 3ghz) because of the heat.

You don't need an internal soundcard, as laptop-soundcards
suck.. you'll have to get an external one (M-audio firewire
401 is apparently pretty good, but if you have money there
are many better ones!).

i just bought a laptop so i thought i'd bump this old
thread.

I got a Toshiba M45-s331

1.6ghz Pentium M Centrino
533 FSB
2M cache
512meg DDR SDRAM expandable to 2gig
80 gig hard drive
CD RW DVD RW Super combo drive
15.4" trubrite display
5.2 pounds

compare this to my current set-up:
AMD Athalon 750mhz
256 ram
50 pound 17" monitor

I am so excited.
It's in the mail, so i gotta hold my breath for a few more
days!

IBM thinkpads are by far the best pc laptops, followed by
dell
I wouldn't dabble with much else
I bought a no name brand one and it died immediately,
meanwhile my 97 thinkpad still runs fine and is a tank

I think it being half the price and upgradable would win the
argument. But people seem to like to throw money away.

If you like spending lots of money for something that will
be useless in 2 years, go for a mac.
