have you seen the new ipod? it looks really nice, not sure
when its out though. i'm trying to find more details about
it but it looks nicer than the most recent design.

i wouldnt call it overrated. the fact i can walk around with
my entire cd + mp3 collection in my pocket is fucking
superb. i've also found a way of connecting it to my car
stereo and make it run off the battery in my car.

OMG, you mean they've built in a blue backlight, which would
justify the probably about €100 higher price??? :P

It already has a blue backlight.

How does the sound quality compare with, say, sticking a
pair of headphones into a stereo system?

well its smaller, thinner and probably has more capacity,
60GB might just about be enough,

as for overrated, i don't think so, i don't know what i'd do
without my ipod, how else can i carry my entire music
collection around with me? Its simplicity in design and
functionality is its main advantage over its rivals. Thank
god they haven't stuck movie playing, radio and camera
features into it.

sound qualiity depends on what earphones you use, i'm using
shure earphones and its the best sound quality i've ever
heard. I'm not quite sure how much the system effects sound
quality on headphones.

some info i found:

Highlights:
Click Wheel

12-hour playtime

Multiple on-the-go Playlists

Delete songs from OTG Playlists

Audiobook tempo adjustment

No more 15 gig model

$100 Cheaper

Speculations:
Uses the same processor as the iPod Mini.

There will be a 60gig iPod to fill the top price slot later.

Perhaps I'm biased. Still not convinced of the durability
and price/quality ratio of portable hard drives. I find the
iPod overpriced when I see that Creative offers a 20 GB Zen
for about $100 less than a 20 GB iPod.

I settle for a small 256 MB USB stick/MP3 player that fits
easily into my pants' pocket to which I copy tracks thatr
foir my mood.

rio karma has bette sound quality and the battery time is 15
hours comapred to ipod's 8. the rio has some great features
that the ipod hasn't. i've compared these players much to
one another and the karma came out much better. the only
thing is that the rio karma is said to have a high risk of
disc failure or something. doin't know if it is much higher
than ipod's ratio though.

plus its ugly (compared to the ipod) and it doesn't have a
scroll wheel, i don't know what i would do without it, its
so easy to scroll through hundreds of artists. The new ipod
will have 12 hours battery which is fine and will be even
smaller and thinner than the current model.

It's the ease of use that makes the ipod. It's just perfect.
Had a 5gb one when they came out, now on 15gb. I've used a
creativelabs mp3 player, it was awful, you pretty much
needed two hands to operate it! Not overrated. I just think
it gets on people's nerves because they see it so much, and
a lot of people may think there are no other mp3 players i
imagine.

yes, it is overrated - suddenly everyone needs this,
which is really rubbish.

I too think it's much too expensive.

offline pantalaimon from Winterfell (United Kingdom) on 2004-07-18 15:59 [#01279782]

scroll wheel, ability to have all music with me, its the
best looking mp3 player, its minimalistic design of its
display etc etc...

offline mappatazee from ¨y¨z¨| (Burkina Faso) on 2004-07-18 16:06 [#01279796]

so basically you're paying $300 for a scroll wheel, because
all the other 40GB mp3 players have these things you
mention.

if your spending a lot of money on a hard drive based mp3
player you want the best, the ipod is, imo (especialy
aesthtically). Also i use itunes so i just plug it in and it
updates in seconds. Not sure if other mp3 players do that.

anyway its only my opinion, i love my ipod, its just
personal preference. As for the cost, i think the new ones
are going to be a bit cheaper.

There's also iTunes, the music store and the seemless
integration of the iPod with Address Book, iCal, and text
files.

yeah, crashes all the time... not.

i haven't found an easier music player to handle thousands
of albums, but if you know of one let me know.

i don't use the music store, files are at 128 kbps, which
isn't high enought quality, plus i'd rather have the cd
anyway.

maybe it works fine on mac.

but it doesn't on pc. it was so shitty in fact, just
scrolling through the list of songs made it chop up.

doesn't work well on every PC. Seems like you either love it

you can't even skin it, or change visualizations, and I seem
to recall that the music library didn't work unless you let
it copy _everything over into its own itunes folders.

offline JLefrere from London (United Kingdom) on 2004-07-18 17:34 [#01279923]
Points: 253 Status: Regular

Who needs another skin when the interface is perfect
already? And you can select to copy over or not. I found
that really useful, consolidate library takes all your mp3s
from everywhere and copies them into folders by artist and
album. I had my mp3s all over the place before that. You
can't change visualisations though :) i think it's a bit
cheeky apple making their logo come up now and again on the
visualisation.

mp3 sucks ass.

north, south, east and west, everyone knows, vinyl is best.

128kbps. hyper compressed, low quality music.

enjoy!

i've never used itunes so i can't comment on it, but what's
non-intuitive about winamp? the only thing it's missing is
built in automatic tag/filename editing.

you can, you select a hole bunch in the library and go "edit
selected items", then you can enter artist, album, etc. and
update tags.

I use itunes over windows media player.

media player is awful. media player 10 is just a blatant
ripoff of itunes. microsoft are entirley uninnovative.

People no longer say 'I want an mp3 player'... they say 'I
want an iPod'. ipod is a cultural icon.

iTunes' interface makes a whole lot more sense, try it out.
Although I haven't used winamp in years.
And that skin is disgusting!! I wouldn't change mine.
Didn't know you could, pantalaimon (those are great books
