It all depends who you read and on what subject, pure
philosophy can be a little dry but if it is applied to
something like art history it can be fun

I was actually looking at a philosophy course today, but
it's been so long since I've been in education I think I'm
gonna start off with something lighter.

Maybe an IT course or something that I already know pretty
well to get back into the whole homework thing, and working
towards a qualification

I heard that philosophy is the easiest major. Well for other
people who are less introverted because I'd imagine there's
a lot of public speaking involved.

you can always get a job at the old philosophy factory

i think the class really depends on the teacher, i took it
in high school and i liked it alot

oh yeah but i guess the point i wanted to make is that
philosophy is something that can get really boring if you
have a bad teacher

might not throw you out the class.

i do. i find myself really torn between literature and
philosophy, since my area of study is really in some nether
realm between the two. why do you ask?

incidentally, i also study in vancouver, and agree
absolutely with 010101.

it's fucking hard.
it gets uninteresting

especually when you work all day then come home for fucking
class.

and philosophy after you've worked all day and are worn
out?

no..it needs to be in the late afternoon when you've been
loungin' and a few beers in ya so you can have some decent
discussion.

philosophy in school become a chore

:'(

i took philosophy as an option in 1st semester, i like it
and i did well at the exam but i wouldn't take it as a
major... a bit for the same reasons as elusive said.

also, it's a bit like text studies : you can get a bad mark
or a good mark for a same paper, depending on who corrects
you - it varies a lot.

i've done some courses on philosophy and logic for my
artificial intelligence study (i guess it's what you guys
call a major). the courses were interesting, but i prefer to
just read philosophical texts by myself instead of being
forced into it and being forced to have opinions about
things i do not care to have an opinion about.

I don't do it in school, I do it at university. It's fucking
great, but I've been interested and determined to study it
since I was 14.

I completely disagree with elusives statement;

"it's fucking hard. it gets uninteresting,"

and also mappatazees;

"yeah, philosophy classes aren't very instructive. just
read the shit.
"

and I have to say that.. if you have the interest, studying
it is MUCH better than just reading the books.. you won't
learn anything from reading books.. you'll have to apply the
knowledge and get into discussions about stuff like that to
learn it...

i studied philosophy of science (descartes, hume, locke,
kuhn, popper etc.) in my second year at university, and
enjoyed it verymuchly. almost did it for my final year as
well (=major i suppose), but in the end plumped for
psychology. less navel gazing and more empiricism (to the
extent that they are comparable). wittgenstein drew a line
under much of the philosophical canon, and now it's mostly
chasing its own tail.

spit the slime out, and wake up in your bed tomorrow as if
nothing happened.

or swallow it back down... and find out how far the rabbit
hole goes.

I swallowed it, but I can't see any rabbit-holes.. however,
I can see a man who for some reason seems to be
creeped out by something.. he's staring at me...

Walk right up next to him so your face is six inches from
his, look him deep in the eyes, and ask him if he knows
where the rabbit hole is.

I think he may soon be hoping for the 'wake up tomorrow and
you won't remember a thing' option.

Ah, he must be morpheus. you must follow him - he knows
where the leather-clad ladies are hiding - but beware, soon
he will start talking pompous, vaguely philosophical
bollocks. enjoy the silent chasing while it lasts.

I have a lot of respect for philosophy students, because
it's one of the few subjects that requires a special
aptitude (beyond just studying like a sweatshop wageslave)
to excel at. Maths and music are the only other two academic
subjects I can think of that you can't just succeed in as a
work-hard generalist.

the good thing about studying philosophy is, that most of
proffesors are awesome people; funny, interesting...not dull
like it's the case with many other studies. at least it's
like that over here.

that depends.. the older they are, the more "power" they
have, so they do lots of fun stuff... the younger ones are
more careful about what they do while lecturing, 'cause they
want to "keep their jobs."

yeah that's true. my philosophy tutor had an awesome curly
moustache that he used to stroke whilst pondering The Big
Questions. he also used to take off his sandals in
supervisions and sit crosslegged, barefoot, smoking a pipe
in his armchair. seriously. i'm gonna miss some shit
about cambridge.

well, there are very few proffesors under 40 here...and i
don't think that about beeing more careful works here, coz
university management gives quite a lot on students
opinions...

i study old school japanese martial arts which has some
interesting built-in philosophy to do with harmony with
natural forces, controlling your own destiny, being a decent
chappy etc. Its philosophy is not studied, as such , but
becomes an outlook that is inevitibly reached as the years
of training mount up. The ideas are simple but to integrate
them into your daily life is the trick and only really comes
to you after deepp martial study, when one is old - One of
the many paradoxs of japanese martial arts... becoming wise
at the end.

Afterall, the path to elightment isn't about the destination
but the journey!
