i traveled through oklahoma this last weekend. through

seems like everyone has forgotten what happened to these
people. they are almost all gone.

anyone here have american indian heritage?
anyone from outside the states have opinions about this?

Yeah I agree it is very sad. Who could say what the world
would be like if the country had not been stolen by evil
white people?

First off:

"Native American"
"Aboriginal American" Not Indian

Reservations are like slums. They are people who are seen as
a sub class, it digusts me. A lot of aboriginal women went
missing in Vancouver (60 is a conservative estimate) and
this went on for ten years before the guy who was killng
them was descovered. I am sure that if they were middle
class white women the police would have invested more money
into it and would have caught him sooner.

actually, i visited a couple of reservations a few years
back and they all identified alot more with the term
"indians" than "native american." they thought it was lame
to basically try and change their names now that they are
well settled and all that. im sure this isnt the view of
every indian out there, but just the view of almost every
one i have met.

same thing happened in mexico, where native women were being
murdered and nobody stopped it...

mexico was also wiped out... most mexicans are a mix of
native (incan, mayan, pueblo...) and spanish.

the term 'indian' was just columbus' ignorance when he
though he was in india.

We've got a reservation just a short jog away from here. In
fact, I could run there within 5 minutes if I really really
wanted to run there. But I don't want to right now. It's
actually really nice.

I don't know how it is down in 'Merica, but 'round these
here parts, they seem to WANT to be segregated... and
they're fucking spoiled, too. They get big nice big checks
from our government just for being the victims of our
murdering great great great grandfathers and their gang of
scurvy-suffering ruffians. Cool for them.

I have some mates who are really interested in reading their
history and way of life. I was in Arizona once visiting the
Grand Canyon and on the way we stopped off at a reservation
tourist stop. It was one of those extremely tacky places
seemingly selling the worst kind of crap to guilty american
tourists. Still, the sellers were porbably making massive
profit so theres the un-romantic reality of it.

We also drove by a reservation where a local told me that
inside this piece of land (i forget the tribe) there was
another reservation belonging to another tribe. Apparently
the lines were drawn under beurocratatic circumstances and
its ended up that the second tribe is surrounded by their
traditional enemies and so never leave their land.. they
have gobetweens to trade and supply them but they refuse to
cross their enemies terrotory so are never seen... whacky.

at the end of the day, in the grand scheme of things, the
strongest survive and when it comes to keeping traditions
alive you have to decide for yourselves how much to
integrate into overwhelming external forces and how much to
stay stuck in the past. Traditional fire-making/hunting
skils are useless in the days of supermarkets etc but song
and dance is an importanty cultural asset that could easily
be forgotten.

yeah, but they are selling that tradition at a huge mark up?
Did you look around at all the developement out there? Not
much. Probably gunna be around for a while. Until walmart
buys out their tradition. Don't feel too sorry for them.
Due to that gene anomaly they get to save thousands on
liqour. Is that rich or you in your avatar, keys?

What is sad is seeing native americans who have lost their
language selling cd's to tourists with "indian" chants on
it.

I´m sad about this. When I was a child and we played
cowboys - I was everry time a "Native American"!
The terrorism is a invention of the white americans.

In a way, every american is reminded if this. Think of all
the states with indian names: Michigan, Idaho, Nabraska,
Dakota, Utah, Navada, Tennesee, Ohio, Oklahoma, Wyoming,
Minnasoda, Wisconsin...

Countless cultures and civilisations were swept away in
history. Not even half of them by "white people". Hell even
tribes of the same people were at war with each other. The
problem is not in the division of people in races... the
problem lies within each human... war and dominance over
others occurs in everyday life. Decay is an absolute
constant in the cultural evolution equation anyway. Stop
being victims of needless guilt.

Yes, we know. All races are guilty of hatred and oppresion
in some form. Indian tribes did make pacts with Europeans to
wipe out their enemies. African tribes did sell captured
enemies to slave traders. The mongols fought against the
chinese. The japanese drove out the white natives on the
island. No one should be judged by the actions of their
ancestors UNLESS they carry the same hateful attitude toward
people.

Cue the dramatic Philip Glass music while images of
self-destruction and humanity's cruelty to itself and to
animals and the Planet Earth wash across the monitors...

I love it when white people claim to have indian heritage -
probably cos one of their relatives raped a squaw, eh.

anyways, I think american indians should leave and join up
with the abboes in australia, and drive the white devils
out! there are fewer of em down there!

GO ABBO, GO!

OOHH, DIS

''Indian'' culture is very alive and well around here,
they're always dancing around in their fancy getups, yelling
stuff. Nobody minds. Myself, I'm 23% native something.

the tragedy is that a culture founded on preservation and
appreciation of the land they lived on was driven
out/massacred/subjugated by a culture founded on
imperialism/materialism/waste.

and now the united states is one of the wealthiest and most
powerful nations in the world. to compare this situation to
any other situation that has ever happened anywhere else
ever is laughable.

They are probably in dire situations because they live in
isolation and rely on the government. It's been hundreds of
years. Maybe it's time to move on. It goes to show that
reliance can turn into a crutch and bitter resentment that ,
in the end, only hurts yourself.

Not that they don't have a right to be a little pissed.I
fully concur with that.

If we had the means to travel to the moon and populate the
place and there were moon people. It would happen all over
again.

I sort of wish culture was never able to evolve in
complexity and technology beyond theirs. My concept of them
is warped by movies though most likely.
