aka 'white nigga'. a caucasian who appropriates the
language, dress and mannerisms of black culture.

or do you think such labels are ignorant and racist,
perpetrated by the enemies of racial integration, by those
who consider black culture foreign and unwelcome?

what is appropriate?
I know what is appropriate as in don't throw up on the plate
when having dinner with your friends (unless you're eating
puke),
but not in this context.

please help.

If you think that's an accurate reflection of black culture
you're sadly mistaken.

ah. appropriate has two meanings. the adjective (as you so
delightfully describe) and the verb, meaning 'to take
possession of without permission'. i could also have said
'co-opt' or 'adopt', but i went for the fancier word :)

Yeah not the best example of inappropriate. Inappropriate is
more like telling dirty jokes at a kids party, to the kids,
when you're supposed to be making balloon animals.

exactly. tim westwood is the son of a vicar, from a
distinctly middle-class home counties background, who
attempts to convey the impression that he is from
compton/south central/harlem.

amusing westwood anecdote: was walking past leeds university
union building with some friends when we spotted westwood's
special customised van, which features a life size westwood
on the side posing majestically in front of a cheesy
lightning and storm clouds background, clearly trying to
portray himself as some kind of godlike zeus figure.

it was frankly hilarious and we all pissed ourselves
laughing when a black dude walking by unexpectedly stopped
in the street next to us and proclaimed "hey that's
westwood! he's my niggaaaaa!"

bizarre.

Tim Westwood isn't a wigga at all. He has been involved in
the hiphop scene longer than most motherfuckers, and he acts
in a hiphop way not a "black" way. He has every right to,
no matter how stupid he sounds.

Urban culture (especially in the UK) tends to be pretty
unbiased racially...we shouldn't allow US prejudice terms to
infiltrate UK culture.

The more these types of labels are used, seriously or
jokingly, the longer racial ignorance will continue for.

yes i agree. but, hip hop or not, putting a massive picture
of yourself posing in front of lightning on a van is pretty
goddamn portentous.

some distinction must surely be made between those who have
spent a considerably amount of time under the influence of a
culture (perhaps westwood does belong in this group), and
recognise the significance and nuance of its language and
customs, and those who jump on the bandwagon of cool without
any respect for the culture or its social and political
history?

You are still doing him down with the under the
influence
statement. Westwood has brought hiphop to a
wider audience in this country, and he obviously loves the
culture 100%. He was there from near the beginning and
there are very few people who get involved that early that
are still active.

Other than his Radio 1 work he has been responsible for a
lot of the promotion and funding of getting hiphop acts from
the states over to the UK to perform. Even smaller acts
that wouldn't otherwise have the opportunity. He has played
a valuable part in the culture.

because he loves hiphop? So anyone who is white who likes
hiphop displays the signs of a wigga?

well i suppose i should have added "and actively contributed
and supported the culture", although that doesn't even apply
to all black people involved in hip hop culture.

and the "under the influence" bit, well i would apply that
equally to the way in which anyone comes to be part of any
culture; we're (by definition) not born with an
understanding of a culture, but learn it by our minds being
influenced by it.

offline DJ Xammax from not America on 2004-07-09 07:27 [#01271317]

The problem is people tend think white people who are part
of the hip-hop culture are trying to be black. It's
sometimes the case. Often it isn't.

ecna, what do you think of westwood's playing up the fact
that he was shot at? all that chest-inflating bravado, as if
being shot at somehow seals his hip hop credentials.

You must know what I'm talking about !

fact that he acts as if he's straight outta compton or
something

".....aka 'white nigga'. a caucasian who appropriates the

language, dress and mannerisms of black culture."

I think the term wigga implies that a person is a hyporcrite
or a theif. So if your motives for listening to or engaging
in certian styles of music and actions outside your culture
are genuine, the term doesn't apply to you. I'm certianly
not an 'Unkle Tom' for loving electronic music and rock.

"the language, dress and mannerisms of black culture."

I don't know if this is specifically black culture. maybe
it's just a marketing/fashion "culture" that was first
adopted by younger people with dark skin, and now the white
skinned kids too....

This is not to say black people don't have a rich culture of
their own(african art, rituals, singing styles, etc) I just
mean to say that I think many things that we now label
"black" are just fashion and fabricated.

I think the argument is also a bit rediculous because black
people adopted far more things from white people than the
other way around. We all share things and are influenced by
them.

Maybe it's one thing to truly love a style of music
associated with a particular ethnic group and another to
adopt speech and mannerisms which you KNOW are foreign to
you and the area where you live. It's the diffrence between
Vanilla Ice and Eminem.
