I work for St Louis County Vector Control, meaning I drive
around in a truck making sure mosquitos don't get out of
control and spread West Nile Virus. Nevermind the fact that
West Nile Virus isn't really that big of a threat and it
killed a grand total of eight people in the state of
Missouri in all of 2003. I just took the job because it's
full-time, it pays well, and a buddy of mine who did it last
summer (and is working there this summer too) said it was
really easy.

I'm technically an "on-call" employee, meaning it's not a
permanent full-time position because it's only summer work.
I work 40 hours a week, from Sunday to Thursday, 3:30 pm to
midnight. It's a decent job, and I haven't really had any
problems with it. But yesterday I put in a request form for
time off for when my girlfriend's coming to visit me at the
end of this month. We both have full-time jobs this summer
and we're only getting to see each other twice for the whole
time from mid-May to late August. Anyway, today I come into
work and Joan, the highest ranking person in the department
(which is very small, grand total of about 20 people) calls
me into her office. I wrote on the request form that the
time off was because my girlfriend was coming to visit. She
comments that it's a "nice reason" jokingly. I asked if I
should've just written "personal reasons" but she said this
was fine. And then she says I can only have one of the two
days off. I ask why and she says that mosquito season will
be at its worst at this time and I'm really needed at work.
I tell her that I've only had one day off this whole summer
(when my brother was graduating from college, and I didn't
even really want to go to that) and I'm not going to ask for
any more time off after this. She agrees and signs the
form.

[to be continued]

I go out in my truck and start working and she calls me on
my walkie talkie. She says I can only have Sunday off, not
Thursday. I ask why since she already said I could have both
days off, and she says, and I quote, "Because I said so."
What kind of juvenile shit is this? I ask if I could just
make the hours up earlier in the week or the next week and
she says no. This makes no sense. There will still be four
other trucks going out on both days and me not going out
will make very, VERY little difference in the long run,
especially if I make up the hours. God, what a bunch of
bullshit. I plan on talking to my immediate supervisor and
trying to get her to realize what a load of shit this is.

well, maybe you should speak to her again first, and then go
to your supervisor.

i don't have any experience with bosses...not yet,
perhaps...

Bitch. Work can be just like high school at times... petty
people are in abundance.

I've never really dealt with bosses on power trips... I've
had some good ones. In my last job, there seemed to be as
many supervisors as there were regular workers... straight
outta Office Space. I had a good one, but I know from
hearsay that a few of them were total dickheads that enjoyed
indulging themselves in the occasional power trip, just like
Joan...

Your boss is female. Get her alone and threaten a sexual
harassment suit against her. Also works with male bosses.
Age is on your side.

The person I'm going to talk to is lower-ranked than Joan,
plus I know her better and she's much nicer. So I'm going
to her first.

Ophecks, almost everyone at this job is incredibly cool. It
just so happens that the highest ranking individual is not.

I want to tell her how fucked up she is, but I also want to
keep my job, so I think I'll do it professionally. Apart
from this bullshit, my job is great. I can slack off sooooo
much and no one will ever notice. I'm on the clock right
now, taking an extended dinner break at home because I'm
pissed off.

hours.

At work today, I was going to let the situation cool down
and talk to her about it on Monday, but I get in and Joan
says, "Would you like to continue our conversation from
yesterday?" I say, "If you're willing to." She says we'd
better go outside. So we do, and I tell her that I
understand she's the boss and I'm the employee and I'm not
trying to undermine her, I just want a good reason why I
can't have two days off. She says the same thing she said
yesterday about West Nile Virus being everywhere and we need
all the trucks we can get. She says that her son wanted to
do something for the 4th of July but was unable to get work
off, but he just had to suck it up and deal with it. I play
her game for a little while then I break out the big guns. I
say "This is not about mosquito control, it's about employee
respect, and I don't see how you can think asking for three
days off total in a span of three and a half months is
unreasonable." She's completely floored by me saying this
and she responds by saying, "Do you want to have this job
next summer?!?" I say I'm not sure, but over the course of
the day I realize that I really, really don't. She says that
she's "shocked" that I would confront her about it because
it's not my place. I try to say more stuff but she keeps
fucking interrupting me and I can't get a sentence out. I
eventually walk away and get on with my day, unsuccessful in
my effort. I'm considering calling the County Personnel
Office and asking if what she did was fair.

Man, fuck that bitch.

You're right on. She's divorced and her son (or sons, not
sure) have drug problems.

3 days is not much to ask for. Its quite obvious to me that
the organisation doesn't realise that people have time off
in the summer. I get 6 weeks leave to take each year, and
until we had a new director I used to take 4 weeks off in
the summer, but she thinks that a bad idea cos it might have
an impact on the service we are providing (IT Support)....so
I'm only allowed a maximum of 3 weeks, which isnt too bad.
What I've done though is book my block of three weeks off,
and the Monday I'd return to work is a public holiday, and
we get the Tuesday off as well (local government
thing).....so I'm almost getting 3.5 weeks, so I can't
complain.

But your boss sounds a bit unreasonable......just cancel the
leave, so you don't lose the days, make up some story that
she is visiting earlier perhaps on a weekend, and when she
is actually due to visit, phone into work, and say you are
sick! :P
