Clifford D. Simak wrote a short story called Huddling Place
about people in the future who only deal with each other
remotely and never leave their homes, and one guy has a
chance to go to space but he wusses out because he's a wussy
man.

I often think of that story and when I do I leave my house
and see and smell other people.
