Aphex Quality Question

I've been listening to RDJ for years now, and recently,
I've been doing a month marathon - nothing but AFX. A
couple of things have been bothering me, and I'm sure the
more experienced listeners on this board might have some
answers:

1) Is the quality on RDJ's first few releases intentional
(e.g. SAW1, Surfing on Sine Waves, Classics, AB3 etc).

You can hear portions of the songs where the high frequency
beats seem to fade away, and then grow stronger again.
There are even parts where it sounds as though he recorded
directly to crappy cassette tape which he mangled, or was
chewed up by the cat. Just listen to his early works on
headphones and you'll see what I mean. Even some of his
newer releases (RDJ album, ICBYD) have major clipping on
some tracks and I feel as though I've got to turn down the
volume.

2) On SAW1, Schottkey 7th path, what the hell does he use to
make that "wash board" rythym effect? If you listen to it
closely, it changes slightly every few seconds - very
inconsistent. It sounds too imperfect to be made by a
machine, unless Rich had it sampled and was triggering it
manually whilst drunk.

Thanks mates.

myth is that rdj made his own equipment for saw1

that might be it

didn't he record saw1 on tape...and therefore the weak
quality?

yeah

its especially bad on xtal

I'm thinking that Rich just probably doesn't even care about
how the medium alters his music. If a casette tape gets
chewed and mangles his song, all the better.

The static sound of clipping is probably an acceptable bit
of noise that is just as strange and intruiging as all the
rest of the intentionally created otherworldly sounds
adjacent to it on each track.

I hope these quality issues are as noticeable to others as
they are to me. Otherwise quite a few people need to get
their ears checked.

everyone notices it...there were plenty discussions about it
already :)
peope don't care though...all they care for is good music.

can you hear the distortion on icbyd?

I like the lo-finessity of Xtal and stuff, but the
horrible sound quality of ...I Care Because You Do is
unforgivable. Bastard.

it a bit cleaner

but then again, maybe its his artistic choice

Ya. ICBYD has some nice clipping issues. It's not that bad
though. Even track 1 on RDJ album (4), has some of it too.

hello, may i point you to the fact that ICBYD is a
compilation of older stuff and therefore suffers the same
quality problems as most older stuff by him.
i have rdj album on cd and it don't clip on my system.

Listen to track 1 on the RDJ album ("4" I believe it's
called). And near the end of the album (last 3rd perhaps),
the synth begins to clip / distort. It doesn't matter what
volume you play it on (I thought my headphones were buckling
at first). No sound system can be rid of it. It's just
there.

I know some producers like µ-ziq have used distortion to
good effect, and perhaps aphex realized this long
beforehand.

Good point E-man about the ICBYD containing older songs.
The last track in particular has ridiculous clipping. I
really don't like it at all.

IMO it enhances the feeling and atmosphere of those
releases. All the little drop outs and tape saturation on
certain tracks give them personality. If it was all perfect
and clean it would be horrible,I like it because you can
imagine the tracks being made in his house, instead of some
8000 grand an hour studio.

I'd like to point out, that on Xtal, what sounds like a
really chewed up synth (the chimey one) is in fact meant to
sound like that. Relative the other sounds, you can discern
that the synth is meant to sound sort of broken while others
remain solid.

well really not everything they do sounds perfectly clean.

what big means, i think, is the sterile sound of druqks

ae is kinda mechanical too, but stuff like slow acid or
rettic AC (a lot of chiastic slide) sounds pretty organic to
me

Chiastic slide does sound pretty organic. Most of aphex
twin has alot of organic sounds.

If I didn't know any better, I'd say parts of ICBYD (among
other albums) were produced with an orchestra, and that his
drum machine consisted of spring loaded hammers with pots,
sawblades, and tin foil on the receiving end.

You have to bear in mind that most of the material on icbyd
was recorded quite along time before it was released.

Does anybody else find the sound qualit on the rdj album is
pretty skewed as well?

i think the aphex twin records have better sound quality
then the avrage

i like the tape sound its more mellow
clean is boring

I think it's mostly deliberate, or if accident considered
part of the aesthetic. I love the few "white noise"
backgrounds in rdj album. It sounds "home made".

i haven't heard much of the older AFX stuff, but to be
honest i prefer character in songs......don't get me wrong,
drukqs was brilliant and i love it for its complexity and
the programming, but it is just too damn clean sounding.

ICBYD and RDJ album sound GREAT because of the fact that
they don't sound clean.......i really wish i could give my
work that kind of sound, but since most of my stuff at the
moment is laptop-based, i'm stuck with clean sounding stuff.
it's one of the reasons why i will always love using
hardware as opposed to computers and software - if you use
hardware, you do get a different sound.

long live "lo-fi"

offline avart from nomo' on 2004-06-29 11:10 [#01259879]
Points: 1764 Status: Lurker

I don´t mind about a little lo-fi here and there, but
clipping is something we could live without. AFX is a true
slacker.

oscillik: try recording your PowerBook-music (if you still
use it, mac-basher!) through various stuff, a tape deck is
often used for that lofi tape-saturaration and
compression... Several Plug ins do a lot of that stuff too

It´s weird: When we finally can make something clean and
nice, we lust for the old sound once heard...

heh, thanks i'll probably end up doing that ;)

i'd still really love to have the hardware and stuff too
though

yes it is weird - for years everyone strived for better
quality music (in terms of clarity) and now we have it, we
want vinyl and tape.

yes i do still use my ShitBook because i took a loan out to
get it in the first place - its not like i could get my
money back or anything. i'm stuck with it now

Scream in Reason 2.5 with preset 'tape' makes track sound
similiarly to RDJ analog tracks.

as well, is intentional.

This topic is gay. Who cares? People that matter (ie. me)
don't. Therefore the rest of you shouldn't. Now go back to
playing your computer games and masturbating over 'women'
you wish were your girlfriends (ladyboys).
