I enjoyed most of it, although it was unconventional -- which is what I ended up liking about it. I was very surprised to see Anna Faris in it, she played a great supporting "Cameron Diaz"-esque character.

my mother in law hated it. but she said something about not appreciating how older women were depicted in the film. i wasn't sure what the hell she was talking about though.
my parents didn't like it either, even though i thought they would. but they said the same as you, that it was too slow.
but my mom is Japanese, so maybe the whole idea of not being able to understand anyone, and being in a totally alien world was lost on a native japanese person.
i thought my dad would like it being a 6'4" tall white guy who doesn't speak japanese but has visited many times but he gets bored easily.
so anyway, i can see why some people don't like it. it was just a very personal movie to me. like i took it into my heart or some shit. know what i'm sayin?

evolume: funnily enough, my parents didn't like it as much as i thought they would when i came home & took them out to see it.
in hindsight, they perhaps couldn't relate to the characters as much as me.
women my mum's age weren't represented at all. and my dad couldn't be more different to murray's character - he doesn't question his existence, because he's happy with the life he made for himself.
for me, i identified with johanssen's character's apparent sense of being overwhelmed by life - not knowing where to go yet & struggling to grasp the moment for what it is (thankfully i think i might be past that stage now, at least for the time being).. and in murray, i saw what johanssen's character could become in time. what i or my friends could become in time. not someone paid $1million to advertise whiskey, but someone who lost their way at some untdetermined point. stopped doing what made them happy & did what they felt they ought to do. now they have made their bed & have to lie in it, awake.. every night.. wondering where their life went.
i don't want to wake up one day and feel like this.
my parents actually found jack nicholson's "something's gotta give" much more engaging. perhaps because the issues that the characters dealt with in that film were more immediate to them. for me, i could see WHY that film was funny. but because the jokes meant nothing to me personally - i failed to engage with them. so i didn't laugh aloud like my parents did.
i guess it just depends where youre coming from on the age spectrum.

Oh my god... this is the worst movie ever if it's the one I'm thinking of...
Here's a humorous excerpt from a good movie called "willow".
High elwin (or something): "Go in the direction the bird is flying!"
Burglecut" "It's going back to the village!"
High elwin (or something): "... ignore the bird... Follow the river!"

it made me nothing. the film is just an attempt to make a really bland story seem all arty and its one dimensional attempt at being an arty flick but it fails because it has no substance the only good bit was them out doing kareoke. its just a really empty film no story no nothing just long slow ambient feeling city shots. fuking drivle in my opinion

sounds like you started watching it expecting some kind of story. logically, it will then seem disappointing and empty. there is not much of a plot - waiting for one is kind of missing the point.
even then seeing the emptiness can be seen as kind of "getting" some part of the film - although I don't think it's empty at all, it just shows people who are perpetually lost.
it's pretty typical of our generation to like a film like this - we can be seen as a generation that is kind of permanently lost. whether this applies to you personally, most probably you know one or more people who are like this (I connected to it pretty well).
I bought it as a region 1 dvd when it came out - haven't watched it again yet. kind of have to find the right moment.

see there you go you've made the mptyness out to be the key factor to enjoying the film. ive watched loadsa great films that are empty but not in the way this one was empty. its not empty in a good way it was just dead. it had one mood. there was no dynamic it failed to shift gears anywhere it was the film version of a drone with a slight modulation about half way through. i dont know i just disliked it the whole taking the piss out of the japanese with jokes that werent really funny. your right though i did expect more of a plot but to be honest i fail to see the intrest in a film without any real plot. if theres no plot theres no real story. the film was simply a drawn out old guy fancys young bird they flirt nothing happens. it basically could have been a 10 minute film with the rest bieng just the lovely city shots and id be happy with that. it just seemed to be claiming to be something its not

no I didn't. I said I don't think it's empty at all.
if something doesn't have a real plot it doesn't have a real story, no. and vice versa. I think you're confusing content with story. I also think you're confusing what you perceive as empty characters with the whole film then being empty.
most of the film "happens" in the silent parts - the subtext, that which is only implied but not spoken out.

same here all i fuking heard was have u heard about this new film its amazing.
blah its fuking pretencious wank and alot of people have watche dit and gone oh wowo this films so deep on so many levels
its not its cold dull blank expressionless
it is empty you cannot imply alot fo story from people sitting around acting all thinky which was also a obvious attempt at exaggerating teh diea that it is a thoughtful film. people sitting around thinking implys very little subtext i see this film as nothing more or above the idea of an older married unhappy man fancying a younger married unhappy lady and pondering fancying ehr and her doing the same. thats it you cannot read any deeper.
im going to go sit and be all thinky in my bedroom and then sell my thinky moments as a pretencious film which was miserably dull
