24 and 60 are used because of the high number of low factors.
maybe 1/5th is nice, but people like getting an integer out of 1/6th and 1/3rd

he said "24 and 60 are used because of the high number of low factors.

But he is wrong nobody divides by three anymore.

5, 10, 12, 15, 20, 30 minutes are all commonly used time divisions which evenly divide one hour.
with hundreds, you have 5, 10, 20, 50--not nearly the smooth gradations when using 60.

I sincerely hope you're joking. in a base 10 system if you need to select different groups of minutes within a constrained pair of values, chances are you will not find one which divides 100 cleanly and you'll get some gay remainder. by the way I left out 25 from the 100 divisors but 25-50 is almost just as big.

Hey, I love you, I hope I wasn't too anal; arithmetic is a concrete issue though, that's why I'm being like this.
arbitrary divisions of time are just another funny thing controlling us.

The division of hours per day was originally derived from an ancient mechanism for counting the segments of fingers on one hand with the thumb. 12 segments on your four fingers of each hand. 12 + 12 hours per day. 12 months in a year. The babylonians were partial to the number 60, and 60 is divisble by 12 (plus other handy factors too). Equals 5. And 5 is a number that you can count on a hand too for ease of calculation.
The year was divided up into soltices and equinoxes by simple observation of the seasons, and by 12. That there were 365 days would have been easy to observe too. and 365 divided by 12 is 30, and there *are* approximately 30 days per month. with a bit left over. God knows how the distribution of those was decided.
All true. Or so it's said.
All completely arbitrary and it became a convention from the ancient Babylonians love of the number 60.
No reason why it can't change. Except that the year can't really be divided by 10. But the current system isn't spread evenly anyway, so why not?
Clock makers would be a touch miffed though.
