It's on.

And it's surprisingly boring and Rollingstone-ish, I've
heard pretty much every single one of these. Maybe they're
saving the controversy for the latter half of the list.

Nilsson Schmilsson is there, so I gotta commend them.

i'm going where the sun keeps shining through the pouring
rain, going where the weather suits my clothes, backing off
of the north east winds sailing on summer breeze and
skipping over the ocean like a stone.

as long as they choose "remain in light" and not "fear of
music"...

ok, "remain in light" was released in 1980. they're off the
hook. for now...

Gettin' down to the nitty gritty.

Let it Be is at #27... higher than I thought it would be.
They keep surprising me!

Countin' down from 30 to 21, we got such guys as Miles
Davis, Can, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Stevie Wonder, Neu!,
Brian Eno, The Ramones, Wire, Serge Gainsbourgh.

Tomorrow, the top 20. Any picks on who'll be first?

Not a chance. What Floyd is left that they'd consider?

Maybe Blood on the Tracks will get first. I dunno, I don't
read them enough to have a good gauge on what they love.

nice to see cosmo's factory by CCR get a mention, i think
its their best album by miles, most CCR fans think its their
worst...

i thought the plastic ono band, the wall & rumours would be
higher but i guess theyre a bit scared of losing what
credibility they have with the 'hardcore underground'

I thought Ono would be higher, too. They had great things to
say about it, but why put a legend like Lennon above
overrated abrasive hacks like Wire? No chance, Vance.

But overall, I'm pretty happy with this list. All the ones I
thought would be snubbed (Led Zeppelin) made it, and the
darkhorse picks like Throbbing Gristle, that rare Big Star
album and the like have been rock solid.

I wanted a Black Sabbath album or two on there, doesn't look
like it's going to happen.

i don't know a lot of these. this might be a ridiculously
reductive and sweeping statement, but i really don't think i
like the seventies sound. with some exceptions, like can,
etc.

Well the 70's is the decade I listen to the least. But it's
all relative, because I still listen to tons of it. There
were some specific musical movements and ''technical
innovations'' from that period that period that really turn
me off, more than any other.

ew david bowie.

It's all over now but the cryin'. I'm about as happy with
this list as I could possibly be, actually, all things
considered. Marquee Moon is a tad high, and there's no
Madcap Laughs, but it's a solid effort. Bravo Pitchfork.

I can hardly believe Zeppelin did so well. Better than I
expected and better than I think they should have.

i'm not a big 70s fan so i'm shocked i own 4 out of the top
10. dylans voice goes straight through me and bowie bores me
to tears. and i did think LZ4 would be number one. but its
nice to see another green world & TEE, 2 must haves for any
serious anally retentive electronic music fan like myself.

Bowie's always underwhelmed me, too. Jack of all trades,
master of none.

i was never underwhelmed by bowie's early stuff. his most
recent albums are agreeably poor but he has so many gems
that he will always be one of my all time favorites. he is
also a master showman, some of the best live shows i've seen
were bowie shows.

id like to respond in regards to the bowie dissing in this
thread... i think you all need to listen to Low and then
realise he is a god.

and how can you say his more recent albums have been
shit???? HEATHEN!!! Its his best since Outside... listen to
heathen... it must be fashionable to dislike bowie at the
moment, he's a fucking gentleman, and a better musician than
any of us could ever dream to be.

bowie is great, low is brilliant.
but it's plainly obvious not everyone will agree with low
being the best album of the 70's.

it's kind of funny the way the only jazz albums on the list
are miles davis... funny but not surprising... regardless, i
am glad pitchfork took the time to do this... i hope they do
a 60's retrospective soon... but they ought to make that one
a top 500... shit man, shit

offline Neto from Ecatepec (Mexico) on 2004-06-26 00:27 [#01256684]

after reading this Pitchfork list it's more than clear why I
really dislike that site. They don't include any Alice
Cooper or Kiss albums!... ok ok... maybe those are too
cheesy for them, but man, no any Black Sabbath??!!

that list was a total joke, I missed "Music for Airports"
even when there were other Eno albums.

Reading their individual lists makes better sense since I
saw "Dark side of the moon" rated high by various writers,
and some ABBA, Zappa and even Judas Priest listed here and
there, except for the guy who rated number one "Congos:
Heart of the Congos", that guy must be smoking serious
crack

nothing personal, I hate Pitchfork

Points: 5437 Status: Regular

if they put shit like kiss on there i would be pissed off...
what would be the fucking point of them doing such a list if
it was just going to look identical to what rolling stone
would come up with?

and really now... have you even heard the Congos album?

whats the fuss about, if this list changes your perception
of music theres something wrong with you. its only an
opinion!

It bothers people when other people make their opinion sound
like complete and utter fact.

offline JAroen from the pineal gland on 2004-06-26 05:50 [#01256788]

yeah theres a point in that ..

i dont care what they write tho, if they think (read:say)
amber was poorly sequenced, so what, i like the music
myself..

and about kiss not included in the list, they clearly have
different opinions. so what?

offline Ophecks from Nova Scotia (Canada) on 2004-06-26 20:06 [#01257346]

Overall, I'm very happy with the list, they didn't disregard
stuff like Zeppelin and the Who for inferior obscurities,
and the lesser known stuff that they included was mostly all
very deserving. Great stuff.

Neto- I was saddened by no Black Sabbath as well. Very
misunderstood and underappeciated band. And I agree that
they should do a 60's list, that would be gear. And it would
cause E-riots.
