Hi all.

long time no post.
I was asked to write an article
on what
we consider to be art, for
the greek art magazine
I work for.
You can find the english
translation over at my
website

www.christinart.da.ru
under the Articles section

it's an article about painting,
but the same arguments
can succesfully be translated
into musical terms.

crits welc.

I read it and enjoyed the article. I agree with it even
though I feel a lot of things that are called art aren't
art. But then it's up to the individual what's art so until
I do achieve my aim of becoming a dictator I can't really do
much about it.

I believe art is meant to be for an elite. Elites are
layered like everything to do with society. The things that
are enjoyed or at least circulated among people who are
higher in the social ladder are closer to art. Art is a
practical term in my opinion.

offline christina from Athens (Greece) on 2004-06-20 16:42 [#01248869]
Points: 124 Status: Regular

well ok it used to be a practical term in
the Renaissance.

and yes, an elite can still experience its
elite art.

but there's art that can be experienced
by average ppl like us. it might not be
ART, but it doesn't CARE to be named
that.

the capital does all the difference.
both the monetary sense, and the
capital letter sense :)

there's Art and there's art.
some pieces of Art can even be
experienced very deeply by even
plain ppl

It doesn't have to do anything with complexity by the way.
Many avant garde types of art like jazz for example where
nurtured in lower social classes. I wasn't saying that the
elite consists of people with a higher aesthetic perception.

There are infinite input points...some lead to the memory
centers of the brain for example and then to the senses.
What you wrote is simplified. Shtu pu

That's a good question. It seems like all everyone talks

don't care at all. Ok, so he's gay. Can't people just leave

Hi,
you're being polite, and I enjoyed you started threads to
trash me as one of your initial atogonistic welcomes, so I
skimmed your article (it's also assumed by all involved that
I am destructively bored), and here's a few comments
(tersely presented, you can justify them yourself)

(1) excellent english if you are indeed from .ru . Be
careful of monotonous sentence structure and punctuation,
and also of both certain slang usage (you said
"off-putting") and when your vocabulary usage dwindles for
some sentences (it makes it seem forced when it comes
back).

(2) Comments like 'the greats had these ultimate theories
but they naturally cannot be correct" and "people don't
question these things" (I paraphrased) will put people off
by their arrogance

(3) It's good thinking, but it's just that--a pile of idle
thought. You don't really follow through any point to the
conclusion, and end up covering many cursorily. This is
fine, but not if it's to be an article--as it stands it's
just mental masturbation. I'm not saying you have to spell
out everything for the reader (making it 'complete' by
making it obvious), but for instance when you started
talking about the meaning of art (I didn't know about
'techni'--that's pretty cool), you should have pointed out
the logical closure, which is that art is expression, and
the ability to express requires skill. Articles
fundamentally intend to impart knowledge.

I wasn't crazy about funkstorung's appetite for
destruction--can you recommend me a good release of theirs?
By the way, Crunch 1 grew on me more, thanks.. tracks 1 and
3 still remain my favorite (unfortunately the most
traditional tracks).

I know what you mean. Here's the thing, you want people to
read it, and I'm not saying you have to make it worse in the
process, but if it's just a lump of thought, a sort of
cleaned up stream of conscience, then, when presented rather
dryly as you did, it gets a little tedious to get through.

Worse sentence ever.

Do you know what I mean? Common ways to make something of
this sort more interesting are to lend a poiint, teach more
(some sort of historical/social/psychological lesson in this
case), or maybe imbue with humor. It's true that you did
generate a sense of the issue well (a 'feeling'), but, I
just got a little bored..

well.. it sounds like an excuse, and it is really..
but the original article, before my editor read it,
was VERY well structured, and excellently phrased
(in greek).
I only translated it from greek, instead of rewriting
in english -and that's always bad.
Anyway, she wanted it to be simpler, less academic
and less of an essay. More unhinged too, since she
took out almost a page of text here and there, and
I had to sew the rest back together without necessarily
meaning much. She ALSO wanted it to be artistic and
passion-evoking, instead of boring prose.

hm perhaps I'll just translate the original text..

but seriously, people should make up their minds
about what they want to read..........

points very well taken though, sneakattack!

Ah, I see. [a close friend of mine is in greece right now,
by the way--he's from thessaloniki (sp)]

That's too bad about the editor, but she may have a point.
I'm different from most people in that I almost always must
do things on my own, even when it comes to things like
books--I get irritated reading something philosophical,
since I view it to be my responsibility as a thinking
organism to derive these things personally.

By the way one of the images (Saturn eating children) was
improperly labelled as on the left, but was one the right (I
hope I'm remembering ok--window closed).

nice work!
