I've been into this kind of stuff lately. Like music from India or Asia. I want to make melodies in this vein, since all i've done lately is consonant, happy melodies. Any advice is welcomed.

Of course, my melodies will still have that old-school game sound to it - been fiddling with my PSS-470 lately and coming up with interesting sounds - like 8-bit sitars and kotos.

search for "Ragas"
a raga is the different modes/scales used in traditional indian music.
but keep in mind, they also use microtones, so it may be difficult to fully emulate the sound, using synths (unless you can modify the keyboard tuning)

Yes, notes between the notes... and if else fails, yes, pitch bend settings and creating your own scales by way of division and working out the numbers can help. Copy and paste the notes accordingly. Laborious but it does work. Good hope.
I have an East Indian friend who things American 4/4 pop is "wild!", while crazy polyrhythms and all that are standard fare for him.
Changed my perspective on things. :)

oh PSS 470... reminds me of my childhood : ) but try to find some of the 'oriental' or 'arabic' notes... they do exist... just try to find the good tonality...
