Apple's claims for G5 Mac branded 'unjustified'

The British Advertising Standards Authority has upheld a
complaint against Apple UK and its advertising agency TBWA
after the company ran adverts saying it was 'the world's
fastest computer'.
The original complaints refers to two magazine ads, one of
which said 'The new Power Mac G5 is here. It's the world's
fastest computer, and the first with a 64-bit processor'. A
second ad said 'Introducing the revolutionary PowerPC G5
processor, the world's first 64-bit processor for personal
computers ... the G5's 64-bit architecture addresses
dramatically more memory - over 4 billion times more than
32-bit chips - so that the systems built around the G5 can
shatter the 4-gigabyte memory ceiling that limits every
other PC on earth'.

The complainants took issue with the claims that it was,
'the world's fastest personal computer', that it was 'the
first with a 64-bit processor' and that 'the systems built
around the G5 can shatter the 4-gigabyte memory ceiling that
limits every other PC on earth'.

In its defence, Apple explained that the G5 was tested
against the Dell Dimension 8300 and the Dell Precision 650,
by an un-named' independent technology testing company'.
Apple said that the tests included floating-point
calculations and Integer calculations as well as for
real-world applications such as Photoshop, programs for
professional and music audio creation and scientific
analysis of genetic research. In all these tests, the G5
outperformed the Dell Dimension and Precision machines.

The ASA asked someone else who pointed out that whilst the
G5 might be faster in those tests, it was by no means faster
for all applications in all situations. What's more it seems
that, according to the ASA judgment, the 'G5 machine tested
was still under development and the tests seemed to be
configured in a way that might have given the Power Mac G5
an unfair advantage'. In other words, Apple got the right
answer only to the very specific questions it asked.

As anyone who has been involved in bench testing machines
will tell you, companies will often try to optimise a
machine to do well in a certain test. This appears to be
what has happened here.

The Authority decided that Apple can't justify the claim
'the world's fastest computer' and has asked the company not
to repeat it.

Apple did better on the claim that it was the world's first
64-bit personal computer. The ASA agreed with Apple that
while 64-bit processors have been around for a while in
desktop machines, these have been 'workstations' not
'personal computers'. Also whilst rival 64-bit desktop PCs
are now common, Apple can still claim to be legitimately
'the first'.

Similarly, the ASA accepted that the G5 could access up to
8Gb of memory whilst machines like the Dell Dimension 8300
and the Dell Precision 650 could only access 4GB of main
memory directly.

i plan on buying a 2ghz G5 next month. my PC is souped up
and goes hell quick but shes becoming unstable as a rocky
ledge in Moldor. it will cost me $4,600 for just the tower.
which is exxy but i don't care, it looks shit hot smooth and
hopefully will work great for audio, video and 3d which is
what i do.

Is G5 the newest one? What was the old one they were
toting? Dual G4 or something? I remember they said it was
the fastest, but I saw tests where the 3ghz AMD 64mb chip
outperformed the Dual G4 1ghzer's. And, yeah, how is the G5
the first 64-bit architecture, when I read about the AMD one
back in November or something?

if you check slashdot archives i'm sure i read about dual
3GHz G5 machines.

but anyways, i think people know my opinion of Apple at the
moment...their portable systems "stable operating, and
sturdy construction?"

bullshit
