Team Shadetek - Burnerism EP

Anybody heard anything by these guys? Any good? Anyone
definitely buying this EP?
Warp are (obviously) giving this release some hype,
describing it as "a blistering blend of hip hop, ragga
jungle and the kind of crunchy electronics pioneered by
Autechre. NYC's TEAM SHADETEk have filled up 'Burnerism'
with the energy and dynamism of their live shows and the
result is very exciting!"
Are you greeting it with open arms? Or a healthy dose of
scepticism?

Heard a mix they did recently called 'wsht' and I think I
heard some of their solo stuff before... quite forgettable
overall, but I'll check this out anyway. These days I kind
of get the impression that warp are losing their touch and
realise it.

They did a pretty funny track where they did the lyrics to
the Ruff Ryders anthem in text-to-speech over a cheesy fm
recreation of the bassline. Then some intricate high-freq
percussive fiddling over it. It was pretty interesting, but
I would have to hear more of their stuff to formulate an
opinion on them.

Some of this dancehall/ragga related stuff that Warp and
Rephlex are releasing is good. And it's nice to see artists
going back to plunder the sound sources that spawned jungle
over ten years ago. After all, ideas are only ever
reiterated; it's the question of how well it's done that's
truly important.

As it's been quite some time since the whole
Sheffield/techno/electronica thing kicked off, it's nice to
see that the artists and labels have all got into a certain
(very well established) sound together; they seem genuinely
excited about it. Like when you and your friends first get
into a certain style of music; you all get excited about it,
save up money to buy records, share mixtapes, read up on the
history of the sound.
It's also nice to see the labels changing their output a bit
whilst still maintaining an overall style. It would have
been sad to see Warp get onto such a winner in the early
nineties and then not be able to expand their tastes beyond
that and evolve a bit.

I just wonder how much of their output is going to be
dedicated to this kind of thing, and how long for..

listening to the tracks on bleep 'hard dragon' seems to be
the stand out track living up to its hype (comparison with
pushbuttonobjects and ae). only track with memorable
rhythm/melody imo. the other tracks sound more like they
were made by a hiphopspider on drugs. you hear the
hiphop-beats but it doesnt make much sense.

shadetek is cool. They have there own label that they have
released some stuff on. Most of there releases are highly
limited. The swoon ep was mentioned by the NMB allstars as
one of the best 12" of 2002 in the boomkat charts section.
I think that one is limited to 300 copies and every copy has
different art and is numbered. I think most of the shadetek
releases are still available through there site. They also
have a 3" cd on the nonresponse label but I never found it.
There releases that I have are ok, some what minamal but I
have always assumed there saving there finest moments for
warp, so I guess we will see.

The new EP sounds pretty cool. Prefuse-ish. You get a sense
that they could do a bit more with the tracks, though.

i fucking love these guys already. I've been waiting for
this for a while, they're really up my street for the type
of stuff i want to do live, jazzy hiphoppy sketchy street
wise sub dub stuff. lots of squelchy drums and stuff.
lovely. better then jimmy. more real.
