What an album...it's improved with age as well. Rza's early production was special, he seems to have steadily lost it as time has gone on, whether it is down to having more options sonically (better equipment etc.) or something else his music sounds flat now.
All the MC's sounded hungry on the album as well, something which has degraded over time. They may be shit now, they may never again produce anything as a unit again, but back when it mattered they were superb.

I remember when it first came out and people were criticising certain production faults, like the MIDI track clearly resetting half way through Protect Ya Neck. These things made the atmosphere of the album all the more pronounced. The whole thing sounded grimy and dirty...
"What the fuck you mean is he fucking dead? The nigga's laying there with his...all types of fucking blood coming out of his head"

RZA's bass lines have this really deep resonating buzz tail that make them sound like no other hip hop i have ever heard...

Yeah, RZA was in some downtime there for a while (all his best beats went into the solo-projects of the wu-members, while the collective efforts kind of re-used that same material, only worse. However, on Iron Flag he's back in his ace, and so are all the members! It's like they went back in time, to the good ol' days ("caaan it be that it was aaall so simple, baby?!") and recreated the feeling of their former glory!
36 is DEFINATELY a classic, and I listen to it quite often!
