it's been another day of the old school for me, and i
figured i wouldn't mind having a thread where i could leech
old school hip hop albums off of people and share finds...

what are some of your favourites?
today i've been really enjoying Pete Rock and CL Smooth's
Mecca and the Soul Brother... "lot's of lovin" is such a cool song...
it's really 90's sounding and verging on syrupy, but the duo
make it work so well somehow... and then there's "the
wigout", what a sweet song... this album blows my mind...

Yes Mecca & the soul brother really redefined the hiphop
sound back then. If you don't have it already, you should
really check out Pete Rock & CL Smooth's "All Souled Out",
The album/EP before Mecca&tsb. 6 great tracks.
Also any EPMD album, but especially "business as usual"
You prolly own some already, but just about any Gangstarr
album will do just fine. All instant classics, except for
their latest album (which was a flop imo).
Some more classics:
Brand Nubian - One for All
Joeski Love - Joe Cool
Nice&Smooth - Ain't a Damn Thing Changed
KMD - Mr. Hood
Special Ed - Legal
YZ - Sons of the Father
Big Daddy Kane - Long Live the Kane
- It's a Big Daddy Thing
- Taste of Chocolate
Kool G Rap & DJ Polo - Wanted Dead or Alive
Intelligent Hoodlum (selftitled album)

just listened to Arrested Development's debut:
3 years, 5 months, and 2 days in the life of...... i dunno, it's got some pretty interesting
production at times, but at other times it just sounds
flat... to much keyboard preset shit... plus the lyrics are
a bit too "consciousness-positive-god-blah" oriented... i
know it's not right, but i find a lot of that stuff sort of
obnoxious (i'm only lukewarm on Blackalicious for similar
reasons)... what do other people think? anyone else heard
this?

Long Live the Kane without a doubt.

Also check out Audio Two - What more can I say
their song " top billin' " has been sampled to death

btw, I have all those albums on vinyl so I can't be arsed to
put 'em on mp3. However I did do that with some YZ tracks,
you could leech 'em off me if you want, as I think I'm the
only one hosting them.

i may just take you up on that... i have a lot to sift
through right now, but i'll probably ask you sometime
soon...

Kinda weird looking at your latest Jim Carrey'esque AV, I
was so used to associating you with the monochrome black
panter thingie :P

i think as a whole that arrested development album is great.
mama's always on stage is just a badass track, and while
none of the others really grab me the same way it's pretty
solid throughout.

as far as other stuff i still really love:

too short - life is..
ice t - o.g. original gangster
scarface - the world is yours
e.s.g. - ocean of funk

as you can see, i wasn't big into the east coast scene.
although another of my favorite hip hop albums was masta ace
incorporated - sittin' on chrome. great tunes there.

also, mecca & the soul brother was pretty good. t.r.o.y. and
straighten it out were rockin.
