I thought the first series was absolutely great, craig david
and michael jackson sketches became known practically
worldwide.

The second series i thot got a bit tiresome, i mean the
Davina McCall sketch "fuck or bugger" wore out after the
third time. The ricky gervais sketch i thot was terrible.

I cant really say i'm lookin forward to this.

I rememeber when Avid had 15 min slots on E4 before he Bo
Selecta started, this was his best material.

it's OK, not a classic IMO because it's too based on "in"
and C- list celebritys, some of which I've never even heard
of, future generations just won't get the jokes for this
reason.
I do find it enjoyable to watch although it does kind of put
me off my food.

Same thing with "Spaced" (though that doesn't put me off my
food, not as much anyway), it's funny, but anyone under
about 25 just won't get half the jokes.

My money's on "the Office", after all idiots are funny
forever.

No I meant under, maybe I should lower the age a bit,
basically anyone who's too young to remember Grange Hill or
Star Wars-a new hope when it 1st came out at the cinema.

I agree with soundguy that it won't age well, but then is
that that important (i love putting two thats together). I
liked Spaced exactly because you had to be of a certain age
to appreciate it fully and you could laugh at the kids for
once, instead of being laughed at by them.

"Spaced" actually very cleverly demonstrated the
"under-a-certain-age-group-won't-get-this" thing with one of
their sketches.

Remember the blond chap (Tim?) is the pub and goes for a
piss. A young chap comes in and stands beside him in the
urinal. To make sort of pleasant conversation he starts to
recite the old "kia-ora" advert ..... "its too orangey for
crows.... ".

Because the fella is too young, he thinks Tim is saying
something derogatory. Its hilarious!

- "what the fuck are you on about?"
- "its just for me and my dog......."

Cracks me up!

I remember that advert.
And I'm (a little) under 25..

As for BO Selecta.. it has it's moments. But it will date
painfully fast. And some bits are utter shite.
The Ricky Gervais/Office sketches aren't funny.. in fact, no
comedy programme's attempts to send up the Office are
funny.. because the Office itself is a comedy anyway.
I just don't understand why they would do that.
Painfully (and hilariously) close to reality as the Office
is, it's only TV. So how can comedy be made fun of?

offline KEYFUMBLER from DUBLIN (Ireland) on 2004-06-04 04:10 [#01222275]
Points: 5696 Status: Lurker

thats just it though. Bo Selectah took the best comedy there
was at the time, and took the piss out of its most "popular"
moment - the Ricky Gervais dance.

They make out that that (<- way hey!) is what Ricky Gerbais
considers himself known for, and sure enough, RG hasn't
done much else after The Office. They painted him as a
b-rate comedian that is riding on the wave of a brief
success.

Its a classic Bo Selectah angle on fame and extremely
subtle. If you remind yourself that Bo Selectah is all about
amplifying any hint of self-promotion to the max, you'll get
it even better.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmwicked

offline acrid milk hall from United Kingdom on 2004-06-04 04:24 [#01222311]

I spotted that though. But it wasn't that funny.

The "dance" is quite possibkly the weakest moment of the
Office.. certainly as far as long term laughs are
concerned.. as it was the least subtle joke in the entire
run of the show. A lot of people struggled with the
uncomfortable humour of the show; but the British public at
large seemed to be able to connect with that because it
could be read on the lowest-common-denominator level of "oh
look, how funny it's a fat man dancing". Slapstick travels
better than any other kind of humour and, for me, has little
or no longevity.

But as for making Gervais look like a b-rate comedian riding
on a wave of brief success - there's nothing that witty
about saying that, as he often says it of himself (when he's
not saying that his work is better than Dickens).

It's too little too late really. If someone comes along and
says they're a cunt, it's fairly ineffectual to try and send
them up as being a cunt. They got in there first.
Self-deprication is a powerful dis-armer.

That's why that particular Bo Selecta sketch doesn' twork
for me.

Gervais has even sent up the fact that he is known as "the
man that does the funny dance"..

It's very hit and miss trying to make fun of people who are
aware of the nature of celebrity. Where Bo Selecta works is
with the people who seem unaware that they are shameless
selfpromoters, riding (not very) high on (very) little
talent.

i'm hearing ya on the RG thing and some of my mates think
the same.

Maybe i'm quantum-leaping here though but i reckon that its
because its the obvious thing to do and
because RG parodys himself even, that Bo Selectah
targets him all the same - its that kind of cheap and nasty
quick-fire show that doesn't take itself that seriously or
try to be ground-breaking and shit. I know RG's dance was
the most low-brow element..... thats exactly why it was
picked on. We'll have to agree to disagree. cha'mon!

Just by having Brent say 'chamon' in the Christmas special
was possible the best comeback to Bo Selecta that Gervais
could have done.
