So I've got Reason 2.5 and I'm determined to learn it proper good, and so henceforth remove myself from the world of beginner grade music sequencing software.
But I am also an idiot and this is hindering me somewhat. I have a keyboard, I have Reason 2.5 and I have a Mac running OS X. I need to somehow mash these three together so my computer is joined to the keyboard and the keyboard is controlling Reason. You get me?
Then all I have to do is work out the rest of Reason.

Connect you keyboard to you Mac, start reason then go to the preferences and choose the keyboard in the midi section.
It should be as simple as this but you could always supply more information, such as keyboard type etc

well my setup is as follows:
Reason 2.5 PowerBook running OS X 10.3.4 Oxygen8 keyboard
i needed to install the drivers before I could get OS X to recognize the keyboard (OS X needs to load device drivers at boot time for this).
As soon as OS X saw my keyboard, everything else on my system saw it - including Reason :)

That's shit...you have to reboot to initialise the device drivers?

i didn't have to reboot upon first installation, but the Oxygen8 installs some kind of startup executable to run at boot time

Well the keyboard is some Yamaha thing, PSR220 I think, I have been told by someone who I don't particularly trust that this should work fine. What cable do I need, I'm guessing Midi-Out to USB or something? And where do I get a driver?

If its a MIDI keyboard, and your computer does not have a MIDI port, then you'll need a little USB to MIDI box
e.g. something like this

reasno doesnt allowed recording from output machines like keyboards, it has keyboard builted up,
the best way would be to record the ,elody, and use it in reason as wav. file ( redrum panel )

er .... ur joking I assume ... the best way would be to record the MIDI signals from the keyboard (which Reason does let you do) and use them to drive one of the Reason devices.

i never used reason as a recording machine, the best way would be to record sounds with cubase, mesh them up in the way you want, then put them into reason

your right that Reason can't record audio but Dannn just wants to use a MIDI keyboard to drive Reason. which is exactly what Reason is designed for.

Hang on... I should be able to play something on the keyboard and have it saved as a sequence of notes in Reason right? So I can change the instrument and mess with it... if all I can do is record the sound of what I play I can do that already. Sorry if I'm talking like a buffoon I'm just trying to make sure I'm on the same page.

one more time, just to clarify:
Reason CAN record MIDI. So you can play something on the keyboard and save it as a sequence of notes, as you say.
Reason CANNOT record Audio directly. although you can get Reason samplers to play any WAV file.

general Reason stuff: the people on the Reason forum are usually helpful if you ask them nicely:
Propellerheads Reason
Also the reason 'Getting Started Guide' and operations manual are very well written and helpful. You should read the Getting Started guide cover to cover

Also, its probably worth mentioning that lots of people use Reason without a keyboard.
You can just draw the notes into the sequencer with a mouse.
I suck at keyboards so thats what I do.

Excellent, thank you. Thanks y'aaaall.
That little USB/MIDI box is kind of pricey about £40 or something. I don't think I'll have much luck trying to pirate hardware either.

Oh that 'without a keyboard' malarkey sounds good... Thats what I thought I was getting into but the Getting Started guide said a MIDI controller was a basic requirement. Then again I am quite an ivory tinkling fingersmith so I would want to some day be involved in hardwarde plug innery.
Has anyone got and music they've made using Reason 2.5 that I could have likkle listen to?

you can load the Reason Song file and then mess around with them

You're a ruddy helpful fellow. No I haven't got MIDI ports on my Mac, I'm going to buy an iBook soon enough though, I take it that it's not hard to get them with MIDI ports... Your music sounds fabulous so far.

thanks! I dunno about Macs, so I dunno whether iBooks come with MIDI ports.
i do know that some keyboards (e.g. Oxygen8) come with USB ports instead of MIDI, which is handy. But probably doesnt help you.

What's that drum sample on Go Scoped? I should know this...
I may consider a new keyboard at some point, when the price of the midi/usb thingy is taken in it's not too bad. I'm not seeing anything in the way of iBooks with midi ports though, kinda sucks.
