what kind portable player do you use?

All i have is a portable cd player (and it annoys the fuck
out of me). I might get either an ipod, or one of those 1 gb
minidisc players - i havent decided yet. Does anyone know
how good the md's atrac3 format is? i dont want to listen to
no wma-esque background noise fest :\

I use a fairly simple USB pendrive MP3 player, 256
MB....bought it for €98 incl. shipping and handling. Does
the trick for me I think. .About 30 tracks fit on it on
average.

well i what id really like is something that holds a lot of
tracks, such as an ipod. but im scared of having to replace
the battery after 1 year..

haha!, you saw that movie (posted here months ago) too
didn't you?

personally I find the iPods MEGA expensive. I'd suggest you
buy a Creative Muvo2 1,5 GB (€229 on mp3spelers.nl). The
4 GB version is €3xx

i'm still very happy with my phillips discman, although i am
looking for one that plays mp3 discs as well. expanium
maybe.

or, if they get radically cheaper, a minidisc.

philips discman, almost 4 years...i know every little secret
of it

i dont know whats so good about minidisc's, its stupid, the
quality recoreds are the same at minidisc and mp3, so why
buying minidisk, especially when you cant record more than
90min. of sounds.
the best i think are HD portable players, 20GB should be
enough for every journey i think

i got a cheap basic CD player and an sony MD, i use the
cheap player more becouse it can play mp3 albums, wich is
really nice!

it's nice to have 800mb of mp3 instead of a regular audio
cd.

now i have to choose between the 1 gig MD or the ipod..

ipod:
20 gig in your pocket
looks cool
(battery?...)

md:
can record things
possibly a bit cheaper

i have the old md, the net md (but i dont use it for mp3
transfer cause my com sux right now) and i wait for 1gb md
and maybe same memory mp3 stick , just cause i can have
instant wavs in usb device.
i liek to record outside more than to listen. but in cars
and trains it's important...with the soundbug !

i have a philips mp3 cd player and just got an oldskool sony
md recorder.. its pretty useful being able to store my
entire mp3 collection in one cd wallet but with the md
recorder its made me remeber how fun mixtapes are! so they
both have advantages.. or something

what are the 1gig minidisc players?
my understanding is that minidiscs only hold 160Meg and to
get a decent amount of music on one you have to use loads of
lossy compression.
on that basis, any 256 or greater flash-based mp3 player
should be much better than a discman because there's no
moving parts (hence longer battery life) and more storage
space.
there are plently of flash-based mp3 players that can record
too

personally I have a 20gig Archos Jukebox FM Recorder
(£220, 20Gig, records audio, has FM tuner also, no copying
restrictions)
and a 512Mb Creative Muvo2 x-trainer
(£170, 0.5Gig, rechargable battery, no moving parts so no
skipping ever, no copying restrictions)

hmmm just been looking at the hi-md minidiscs...
sony press release

they do sound quite good.

ultimately though, I think removable media are becoming more
and more redundant. hard-drive and flash players are the way
forwards. sealed units, fewer moving parts, etc.
