Buddhist Monks/Meditation/Masturbation

Yeah, so I read somewhere that the crazy things that monks
can do while meditating (like drying a soaking wet, cold
towel on their bodies, just from body heat) is a result of
not masturbating.

Does anyone have any info on this?

giving up masturbation isn't worth the parlour tricks

ive got a little bit of experience in it myself .. if im
walking around in the cold i can warm up my hands by
focusing on them

Well to get by with not masturbating they get a little boy
to give them 'loving'.

basically a meditator/yogi can direct their focus to any
part of the body, and can minimise pain, warm things up,
strengthen them, relax them, etc .. i guess this is what is
meant by qi ..

ah

and like, when they push a car with a spear, with the point
on their throat

do you know what it is about not masturbating that allows
this to happen?

meditations and its quite effective when trying to
sleep/clear your thoughts etc.. now imagine it on such a

abstinance is part of strong mental discipline. its not
necessary, more a spiritual thing. some sadus tie knots in
their genitals to prevent sexual thoughts crossing their
mind ..

anyways, do you have any links? google just gives me

i dont know what the knot tying does long term .. but im
assuming theyd undo it to go to the toilet hehe

sorry i dont have links at the moment .. this is all off the
top of my head .. but meditation and qi are probably
subjects to analyse .. i know they dont come up with
particularly useful searches either ..

my teacher has written outstanding books that explain
meditation. i can send details if you become interested.

well apparently a lot of monks are homosexuals.. . because
of the religion spliting the men into monks and women into
nuns.. . a lot of them see the ability to "get off" with the
same sex as reason enough to stay away from the opposite
sex.. . kinda silly. ..

also.. . Id hate to think of the actual health risks
involved in not masturbating.. . some of those guys must die
of exploded prostates. ..

Zeus: Assuming you were serious when you asked your original
question, maybe you should try to get your hands on a copy
of the "Hatha Yoga Pradeepika". While this is a yogic text,
there are some similarities with some schools of Buddhism
e.g. both paths utilize meditation of one type or the other,
both have had "super-natural" powers attributed to
practioners (claivoyance, teleportation, levitation, the
increase in body heat, although this last one is not really
"super-natural") and both deal with Tantrism and it's
application to sex. Not all schools of Buddhism or yoga
have these practices or beliefs and most schools stress that
these are at most a "side-effect" of following the path to
Enlightenment and that they will not be gained by those who
do not have Enlightenment as their goal. And of course,
this is all opinion, not truth, and is definitely not
necessarily MY opinion.

There are masturbation sutras. It can be a part of
meditation.

Anyway,
you can easily raise body heat by focusing on your body
parts, usually palms. It is nothing unusual.

Point of meditation is to feel dead for a slight moment.
Buddhism practices what it means to feel like dead by
controling the body.

quite a few types .. but they all relate to each other

breath, 'body asleep mind awake', sound, visual,
mantra/affirmation, naming distractions and 'watching with
detachment'

..
in a meditation ill generally focus on sound or the visual
to 'come into the present'

next ill focus on the breath and scan the body to realise a
focus. mantras and affirmation are good to cultivate the
focus, as are any meditation objects ..

finally the 'naming' and 'watching with detachment'
techniques help me casually observe thoughts that arise
rather than get distracted by them.

I've tried meditating, and I've tried T'ai Chi. The
meditating-stuff, I discovered I could do on my own, so I
didn't have to pay money for it. The T'ai Chi you can go to
here in Bergen is nothing more than a happy-camp for
hippies... it's not real T'ai Chi, it's just bullshit. If
you ever want to try T'ai Chi, make sure you're not being
taught by a Japanese man who speaks as if he wants to sell
you sexy underwear, but all he talks about is trees.

I can warm up certain parts of my body, yes, but I don't
live in celibacy (spelling?).

t'ai chi is bollocks -- it's t'ai chi chuan you want to
practice - t'ai chi is the car without the engine - pretty
to look at but won't take you anywhere.

About masturbation - as johnny says, it's nothing to do with
being "spiritually" pure or any of that bullshit, it's
merely a practical way of saving up your sexual energy,
which is a vital energy source. Look at tantrick sexmagick
-- that is a section devoted to the storing up of sexual
energies by putting off the moment of climax for as long as
possible, hours and hours -- so that when the climax comes
it is mindblowing and connects the climaxer directly to
whatever it is they think is there (heaven, godhead, satori
etc).

To masturbate or to not masturbate is just a personal choice
-- you can advance and still enjoy a wank.

the 'qi" is an inner energy gathered in lower part of
stomach, where, due to monk religions ( all eastern almost
too ), all energy of world is gathered.
meditation can help you using that energy, and warmning up
body parts is the smallest thing you can do with it.
also, meditating can help you in general, even without using
'qi"

t'ai chi - its good when you know something about eastern
philosophy, and when you are even little into martial arts
and stuff.
for someone who never heard of it, or just dont like the
stuff likr that, it wont work. also, its like Zen in moves -
it can help, but the moves are not really important - what
is important is what is happening in your head when u are
playing in
t'ai chi . thats the point.

i never used t'ai chi , but i have enough energy from what
im practising, so maybe someday...

Martial Arts were developed to strengthen monks' bodies so
that they could practice meditation. If a person practices
Martial Arts without the spiritual aspect of it, then they
can only ever get half-way towards attainment. I have been
studying and practicing Shaolin Arts on and off for about
three years now (in between bouts of illness), and it does
me the power of good, not only physically, but in my mental
outlooks.

Meditation is only for relaxing body and mind. over and
out.

I have lived with buddist munks for a while and been doing
meditation for years, so I know this things.

When you meditate you are just to fokus at you breath,
nothing else. Efter some minutes you fell very calm and
realaxed. =D

One of the meanings of Zen is "meditation", just as one
outcome of meditation is relaxation... there are many forms
of meditation, and to think that the overall aim of
meditation is to be "chilled out" to use modern parlance, is
an offence to practicioners of meditation and is also very
short-sighted -- in fact, it is a Western viewpoint --
Westernised meditation, like Westernised religion and
thought, misses so much in its rejection of the truly
spiritual.

The most common translation for Kung Fu that I've seen (and
that our master taught us) means "Hard Work".

Free your mind: Yes, the detachment that comes with
meditation is useful to endure pain, but it's not what
allows them to do their mad physical feats. The harsh
physical exercise regime is what allows certain buddhist
monks to do the "party tricks" like standing in horse stance
for an hour at a time, break stone slabs, etc.

I think a lot of people like the "idea" that you can do wild
stuff just through meditating, because meditatig is a
lot more pleasent than having to do physical fitness for
hours every day. Also, if it's in the mind, it suggests they
can master it quickly, whereas no one but a fool would think
they have the physical endurance of a dedicated monk after a
couple of months working out.

from what I gather, Fu = Old man, grandpa, master. and Kung
(sometimes "gung") = will, strength, concentration.

I think you'll find, Ceri, that fools can do the darndest
things :P

Like I said before, Martial Arts were developed to
physically condition monks for meditation (specifically
sitting for hours in the lotus position)... I think that
anyone who wants to become a serious meditator should first
practice Shaolin gong-fu (Mastah -- the spelling "Kung" is
the Romanticised spelling for Westerners - I always prefer
using the traditional spellings myself when I can) and also
Yoga -- this will help make the body supple and this in turn
will help lessen its intrusion when you are meditating :)

Also --- remember that to destroy the mind you first have to
control it... so remember that your meditations will have to
evolve -- first I would suggest that a person train their
mind to focus on one thing -- one famous Chinese person
attained enlightenment simply by saying "I am sweeping" as
he swept the floors of the monastery which he attended (he
was looked down on by most of the other novice monks who
felt foolish wnen he attained enlightenment - a crucial
point in Zen, which bypasses the intellect). So, to begin
with, simply say "I am walking" over and over to yourself,
like a mantra, when you are walking anywhere... it not only
helps you to concentrate the mind on one thing (don't be put
off by the fact that, at first, your mind will wander all
over the place), but it will also increase your awareness of
the simple things... this is the same reasoning behind the
Breathing Meditations... once you have conquered the mind by
whichever meditation(s) suits you best, you can then move up
to higher attainments, dharma and satori et al... Zen is
quite akin to Yoga in this -- Crowley's 8 Lectures In Yoga
are an excellent starting point for Yoga, and Wong Kiew
Kit's Complete Book of Zen is an excellent starting point
for Zen. If you're seriously interested in this, read,
study, and practice these two texts.

I prefer a living and active martial art than meditaion and
stuff. I've seen the Shaolin Monk in action and while its
impressive, i dodn't think you csan achieve those pohysical
feats under real actual modern aggresive curcumstances -
muggings, riots, pitched battles.

The martial art i do (Bujinkan Budo Taijustu) is about
studying the human body as it moves and comes from real
battlefield conditions over a 1000 years. We learn total
natural body movement (its quite like the feldinkras method)
and it incorporates both sides of the same coin - breaking
the body and healing it . Through this study of how to
damage somebody efficiently - ideally you damage their
spirit/agression, not their body unless necessary - you
attain the paradox of all true martial arts. Learning how
not to fight!

Meditation is nice, but living a balanced active life
without needing to retreat into the self is where i want to
be. You can tap into the universe by being alive with it.

well, according to my sources, it is. The northern and
southern regions of china have a slight difference in
pronouncing certain words, and so, when europeans try to

It's the same as the fact that englishmen can't tell the
difference between a I and a Y when pronounced in norwegian.

I dont think most of you never tryied medtiation, only have
read some trash about it....can sitt in lotus position for
hours, beleve me there is nothing mysterius about
meditation, the "only" thing that will happend that you get
really really calm and you feel that the seratonin levels
are high as hell.

Yes its true that there are a lot of diffrent kinds of
meditation styles...but they are all hokus pokus=trash. Some
even includ music, and thats SO WRONG! Exept the pure form
of
meditation that Im practising, where the only thing you do
is to conentret on your breath.

There is no paradox to the martial art learning not to
fight.

And martial arts were not born to learn how to fight; they
were born to make the body supple and under control for
meditation.

I'm sure your martial art will come in dead useful to you
when you don't go off to fight hand-to-hand combats or when
you don't have to fight a gang of 20 gang members in
downtown Dublin.

"And martial arts were not born to learn how to

"

well.. the Shaolin monks developed Kung-Fu as a means of
defending their temples from raiding mongols... it was
initially a self-defense technique that they incorporated
religious symbols into in order for them to be able and
train and be holy men at the same time.

Actually, that came later -- they became Shaolin Monks when
