Ah, now this is what I call a fucking topic! The Smiths were probably THE best band to come out of the 80's... No doubting it. Morrissey has the certain knack to make something so tragic sound so beautiful... "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" or "Girlfriend In A Coma" for example. :) Johnny Marr is a god.

The Smiths are a fabulous band, often wronly tagged with being miserablist by people that never heard them but only read the song titles. The combination of Morrissey's masterly lyricism and Marr's astonishing fretwork, added to the fact that in the space of only 5 years they managed to bang out 5 classic albums, makes The Smiths, true legends. My fave songs are "The Headmasters Ritual", "How soon is now", "Frankly, Mr Shankly", "Unhappy Birthday", "Death of a disco dancer", "Reel around the fountain", "Bigmouth strikes again", "Sweet and tender hooligan", "You just haven't earned it yet, baby"...oh all of them. Fave album is "Meat is murder". oooooooh.

There are only two artists I feel more attacted to than The Smiths... and they are The Beatles and the Soft Boys. The Smiths are a perfect 10, an incredible band.
I still think Morrissey and Marr could work some magic together. ''You Are the Quarry'' is a rock solid album, and ''Boomslang'' has its moments.

i picked up the singles album on friday. it's my first real exposure to them and i enjoy a large number of the songs immensely. i don't want to overdo it with them, though, so i think the only other albums i'll pick up are meat is murder and the queen is dead.
the boy with the thorn in his side is probably my favourite song from the singles.

I downloaded Morrissey's new song from Oink the other day, and it pretty much sucks. So I went back to listen to Vauxhaul and I to jog my memory and remind me of what he can do when at the top of his game. I'd say Vauxhall is as good as any Smiths work bar TQIDead.
