Discuss.

Personally I really like his work. Maybe not as hard
hitting as Autechre but definitely good. I think he is a
little underrated actually.

strong of a connection. i think he's good.

I'm a big fan of Tides, and his early work is sentimental as
my first "IDM" or whatever. I've given Lilies a listen, but
nothing really caught my ear and it hasn't been in heavy
rotation on my winamp playlist.

HA!

I described him in exactly those words, once!

to me, he seems to fill the niche in the market for people
who desperately want Autechre to return to their
"old-school"-sound, round Amber, possibly even round
Incunabula.

Yeah, I'd agree with that, but he still makes enjoyable
tunes.

Whatever. I think Arovane is more in Skam Records territory
with his work than Warp Records...

But that's between me and my ears...

I like Arovane. Sure, the music is/borders on derivative,
but everything and everyone is. The selling point for me is
the melodies, and The Storm has one of my favorites.

I doubt autechre were that original back then.

arovane sounds absolutely nothing like autechre. i still
dont get how people can make the connection. other than they
both have "beats" and "melodies". theres really no other
logical way i can look at it. im not saying that arovane is
original in any way, because he definitely isnt. but could
someone seriously give me a good connection that doesnt rely
on bullshitty reasons? ie "the melodic progressions are very
similar"--no, they aren't. and even if they were, you think
autechre are original in terms of that? that they "invented"
stuff like that? i've heard people drop "amber" as the
biggest connection, and even that is only barely connectable
and vague to me.

i'm not trying to stir shit, i just honestly thought the
whole autechre-sounds-like-arovane thing would have died
down by now. but its years later and people still say the
same thing about it. its just weird to me.

i also hope that fennesz and team doyobi thing was a joke.

i'm a little worried that i'm not going to like the new
one... i've heard it once almost a month ago and haven't
listened to it since... it sounded pretty, but a little too
saccharine and over-produced.... hopefully when i check it
out again, my fears will prove unfounded...

one word
Autechres Draft is so bad they use many technics and effects
and programming bla bla to produce a track. I can feel
nothing about every track on Draft its totally stupid
programming they want to show what is possible but the music
is bad. I like all from Autechre but Draft is for me
absolutely bad sorry
On Arovane music I have feelings and get into a track

I agree 100% with you.
I don't get it where they get the connection too autechre.
it doesn't sound anything like autechre. complete
bullshit!!!!!! it really pisses me off when people say that
about arovane. do you people even listen to the music? for
fucks sake in what way does the track "Amine" or "tascles 7"
sound like any autechre? if you want you can compare
everything to autechre. stop doing that and just listen to
the music.

offline ecnadniarb on 2004-05-26 01:56 [#01207686]
Points: 24805 Status: Lurker | Show recordbag

The reason I connect arovane and autechre is because they
both begin with the letter a you stupid motherfuckers.

Actually it was not a direct musical comparison I was
making, it is just that arovane is much more likely to
appeal to autechre listeners than, let's say, aphex
listeners. Both, for me at least, evoke similar feelings
while listening. I appreciate this won't be the case for
everyone (especially those who seem more interesting in
comparing technical production values) but that doesn't mean
you are right in your dismissal of what other people think.

In the same way you could ask if Mike P is the poor mans
Aphex. Technically they produce very different sounds but
in the general scope of the music they are involved in you
can make a comparison.

And Arovane is OFTEN dismissed as similar but not as good as
autechre which is what I was attempting to address.

it really pisses me off when people say that
about arovane.

That's a bit fucking childish...why should it bother you?

Silly topic. But I would like to recommend "Icol Diston"
where he has collected early works on one release. Strangely
these tracks are more complex and edgy than "Tides". The
opposite development compared to Autechre.

if arovane would be a poor man's autechre, what would
funkstorung be? or, according to some, funckarma?
you know what; poor is the rule and rich is the exception.
and what does this mean? this means that arovane is the rule
and autechre is the exception. so, thank god for the rules,
'cause without them, there wouldnt be exceptions.
stop bashing the poor motherfuckers!

don't quite see the connection either. people who say that
must have an under developed hearing or something. he's much
more melodic than autechre. sure, i like autechre but at
least lately he hasn't been seeing this as a programming
contest like some artists...

I am listening to Tides right now, and I hear/see/taste/feel
no connection to early Autechre. Absolutely none. Except
that both are rock solid.

Arovane has borrowed ideas from autechre but I don't think
its anything to use against him. Everyone pretty much has.
I like arovane but I find a lot of his tracks besides on the
tides album to sound very similiar to each other. In some
sense I feel like he writes the same song everytime.
