Yep, I've wanted a bike since I was about 17 (my Mum stopped me back then). I'll probably get one within the next 2 years.

YOU WILL pass your CBT, i took mine later year, all you have to do is show that you can balance, indicate and generally be aware of your road surroundings. Are you going for moped or motorbike?

I think this will be perfect for you, especially now the summer is here. I got mine exactly a year ago next month. They are fast, cheap to run/maintain plus parking is hardly ever a problem. Many places actually encourage free parking for motorbikes / mopeds. If you are just using your car for local travel then you will be much better off with a bike.
Practical yes. I only use a 100cc moped at the moment, my insurance was about £300, but consider I had never owned another vehicle before and I only have a provisional licence. If you have a full licence plus road experience then yours should be even cheaper. (mine will reduce by 40% this year due to no claims :) )
A word of warning though, you may find it hard to get your bike booked in for services/repairs this time of the year since everyone will be out on theirs, also bike shops are only interested in selling bikes at this time and are not too bothered about servicing.

Yes, the parking troubles in built up areas are one of the things that do my head in most about cars.

Bikes are cheap and nippy, a couple of my friends have them. I want a bigass hillbilly pickup truck but I haven't got the cash, unfortunately.

how much are you paying for the CBT?
I didn't buy much gear, luckily my dad gave me his old bike helmet, I just use some cheap gloves and don't bother with leathers. It might be worth you buying some decent kit though for a motorbike (rather than a moped), it all depends one how much of a risk taker you are I guess.
As for security, mine has a steering lock and an electronic security system (it wont start without a coded key being inserted). If you bought a heavy duty chain to go through both wheels then that should stop anyone making off with it. A motorbike would be a bit too heavy for someone to just pick up and walk off with.

Personally if I was in your situation I would just go for a moped, much cheaper and far less dangerous. I would only get a motorbike for long distance journeys, but at the moment all my travel is within 20-30 miles or so of my house.

Aw man, motorcycles are fabulous. Cruisin' through the countryside on one of those is sublime. I've been thinking of getting into that stuff, I have access to a few 'bikes, but I lack ambition (and I don't look like a biker... if I see somebody on a bike that looks like a pansy, that negates the appeal). Have fun, and wear a spike studded leather jacket.

I've got my proper test in a couple of weeks. CBT was a doddle, good fun though- ripping through country lanes. So mong in a Jag nearly hit me, but it hasn't put me off.
If you're thinking of just doing the CBT then getting a 125cc, be wary- the CBT will run out quicker than you think. A mate of mine is scrambling to get his full test done (otherwise his CBT will have to be redone). Also, the govt. are talking about reducing CBT's validity from 2 to 1 years :-/
