oooh but titsworth-the point is that a good collaboration would be interesting-slipknot use the age old trusted cliche of painting themselves as 'alternative'-the fact is that they are marketed EXACTLY the same way as pappop boy bands in the uk-there really is no differance other than the stlye of their 'music'-you really cannot trust the quality of music on sales alone-really you cant. look at this weeks number one in the uk-it really is down to how well the record company have marketed and sold the image of a group that gets it airplay/video play etc- and i dont trust the gallop pole as much as i love to burn the fucker.
graet music transends-stravinsky didnt make the bets music of the twentys, the beatles didnt make the best music of the sixties and hendrix didn't make the best music of the seventys-work that are classed as genius now rarely sold many 'units' during their time.
did you know that drukqs has to date only shifted 20,000 copies? not that many for an artist that everyone was creaming themselves over in his five year absence.
collaborations im all for, but just because the version will sound 'better' based on a groups style im definately not-and if thats the case, slipknot, limp bizkit, papa roach etc etc etc would not cut the cheese. and besides these bands come and go on a loop of 5-6 years anyway-so how credible really is their output?
phil collins and afx-now your talking....
whens afx going

i thank you for your effort but i think you missed the point. i can vouch for slipknot's quality, i've heard a slew of their songs. they sound nothing like limp bizkit or papa roach which are mainstream rock-rap acts. slipknot is metal, bordering death metal. think slayer, early metallica, underground hardcore bands, etc. totally different field than what you're thinking. i'm not saying they're originators in their music or in their stage attire. i'm not. i am defending them for putting out the type of music they do best, catering to a niche instead of trying to appease everyone like the bands you just mentioned. trust me, i'm the last one to judge success by units sold. i was saying that i think it's cool for a major label band to put out an ear bleeding death metal album and sell a few hundred thousand copies than put out a watered down product and sell a couple million, which slipknot could have done even easier.
that said, my talking about slipknot in the first place was just to correct people on who they are (ie: not a mainstream rock/rap act, or even melodic at all). as i said, i am not a big fan of theirs. but when i have the opportunity to squash misconceptions i usually take it. download some of their tracks. i think them putting firepower into a live version of 'come to daddy' would be brutal, funny, and a jolly time for fans of both acts.

really? interesting-fair comment, but ive heard some of their stuff (albeit, not all of it) and it sounds well commercial to my ears-and im sorry, but they are marketed in exactly the same way as pop over here-thats why i have no respect for them at all really i havn't -it isn't difficult not to play the music industry game gain respect and stick to your vision or whatever got you there in the first place-look at joy division. there is unfortunately pattern over recent years for this stlyle etc whatever to reappear-thats what im dubious about. compared to the pioneers (fair enough, in my opinion), steve albini, shellac, big black etc. dunno maybe you're right a collaboration between the two may be good for the reasons you suggest, i can just think of more valid collaborators-kevin shields, frank zappa (r.i.p.), tav falco etc etc. i dont see the validity in a band churning out what they do simply because they're mainstream and that giving it a twist. not good enough. and besides i think they're music sucks. sorry.

exactly the point, nancykitten.
ken: kevin shields/afx collabo would be ace, that i agree with. but slipknot are much heavier than big black, shellac, or anything albini's ever produced, including that new 20 minute mogwai song "my father my king" which is pretty damn intense. i don't exactly know WHAT you've heard that would sugest otherwise. from what i can gather from your replies you're criticizing slipknot for the way their record label markets them. is that it? well if advertisement makes a band's MUSIC mainstream than you can't listen to aphex twin anymore (look at all the print ads for that one, not to mention the 2 track promo single warp pressed w/o richard's consent). i don't know if you like bjork, but if you do you can't anymore - her newest cd (not to mention all the ones preceding it) has been advertised in a million different ways. i could go on and "ruin" your ideas of "anti-mainstream" electronic and avant garde acts but you get the point. it's a label's job to sell the product, which cd's all are - products. the music can be art, but the cd is a product to be sold to the masses. believe me when i say sire would be thrilled to sell 10 times more copies of drukqs than they have. they've invested a lot of money in the ads i imagine. do you think the record companies' advertising campaigns for every album promoted mirrors the music therein? sounds like a silly claim to me. but that's exactly what you're telling me - that slipknot is NOT a worthy band for the job of putting some live death metal into "come to daddy" JUST BECAUSE they are advertised. it's funny because i don't listen to any mainstream rock anymore, and i haven't for 2 or 3 years now. i'm not a hard rock or metal fan either. but i know slipknot's music (clearly better than you or most of the people in this thread do) and i have read a couple interviews with them and i admire their musical integrity. they DO do whatever the fuck they want, which is to play loud as fuck music and care fuck all what the radio and mtv thinks. fuck.

He did a rough kind of early version of it at uk pheonix festival years ago.
He played his equioment from inside a wooden garden shed onstage!
Guys dressed as the giant teddy bears from the Donkey Rhubarb video were dancing on stage. It was great.
And yes, slipnot suck. I have it on good authority that they only wear masks to stop the young fans finding out that they are all really reaaly old and boring...

they are old, yes, and they are very normal people. i mean, they're from iowa. and a lot of their music sucks in its unoriginality. however a lot of it's wicked fun, and that has nothing to do with anything outside of the music itself.

i think if mr. aphex twin did a live version, he should get squarepusher to do the guitar parts. squarepusher can play the bass guitar, so it couldn't be that hard for him to learn come to daddy on normal guitar.

I like Slipknot.
It's not big, it's not clever, and it certainly ain't Obituary, but when u feel the need to vent some anger (or smash something) then they beat most music for that kinda vibe...which, in MHO, is completely pre-meditated.
By the way, I'm in my mid-20's, am well-well-well-WELL-versed in death/thrash metal history and KNOW what I am talking about. And I have NEVER bought a black, band hoodie.
And to all those opposed...well, huh!

--- noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooo!
how could anyone w/ enough sense to like aphex twin possibly like slipknot?
i have a feeling that all the posts in support of the idea are from teh same person signing in as different names.. eheh
---
who are you to judge my intelligence or maturity by what I listen to? I have a wide arrya of music I enjoy and draw inspiartion or comfort from, including Slipknot, one of my fave bands, and Aphext Twin. Beauty can take many forms, and where I find it I will. If you do not like or udnerstand a band that is alright, but respect thsoe who do and the band itself. For the record I think this collaboration would be pretty cool, and I bet sid would really like the idea.
I could go on about liking manson, slipknot, and otehr "crappy angsty bands" but I doubt any one really cares for intelligent music debate here. (reffering to the people who just post "SLIPSHIT=GAY" and such responces..)

Slipnot is more over than Korn and Limp Bizkit put together. Music for white suburban teenagers to crank when they are sent to their room without any supper. Any thing cool I can think of that would come of this combo would be if Aphex appeared as the Nosferatu creature from the Come To Daddy video and tore the bellys out of all sevem members :).

if someone is interested, i can upload the live version of Come To Daddy, or the intro of it, on my site. It's from the same show as the "Random Bullities" featured on this page (Roskilde 95/96).
As i said, it's only the intro of it, because it is so fucking mental you couldn't believe it...lots of screeeeeaming.
