Let's discuss him. I was quite surprised to find out Warp
signed him.

I was quite moved by his tune, Damage II. It's quite
beautiful

they are. intelligent dance music used to be for lonely
dorks so they could feel special. it still is, but really
only for those still into the dead genre. it's like people
listening to disco after the fact, only disco was actually
musical.

i'm glad that warp have acknowledged this and are signing
actual musicians -- which will keep them in business --
rather than annoying, recycled noise that you pretend isn't
annoying, recycled noise.

your family and friends are right -- it's a joke.

i'll agree that Gravenhurst is one of Warps strongest
releases in recent times.
It helped me regain faith in the label after releasing that
awful !!! album.
Gravenhurst is one hell of a talented songmaker.
"Fog Round the Figurehead" has been doing some serious
rotation, as has the whole album.
I'm gonna seek out some older stuff too.

i seen gravenhurst a couple of weeks ago in a glasgow pub,
was enjoyable. reminded me of drake and simon and garfunkel.
one of his songs was a complete rip off of 'Famous Blue
Raincoat' by Leonard Coen.

where was it?
stereo or something?

No it was in mono, the small record store/cafe beside the
13th note. it was just a small set. everyone talked the
whole way through it though

in mono? yeah, people in there are a bit rude. i've been to
a couple of wee album launches and things there, and there
seems to be more "scene whores" than music fans to be
honest. good wee record shop though. they stock rare
toytronic stuff there. and a shitload of leaf label
stuff...can always find stuff i like there.

yeah its a really good store, really cheap too. shame its
such a cunt to walk to, i can never be bothered going

i really can't see idm as being a dead genre, since it never
was a fad to begin with. it doesn't really have it's
non-music based trends to go along with.

also, you are talking about the singer/songwriter genre
which easily could be said to have died at the end of the
70's. if it's done now it could be easily called retro,
which is the worst thing anyone can do in music.

also, the all out name dropping fest that warp had when
discussing the new signing was disgusting.

it's not retro, it's indie folk. you know -- cool music.

mm yes, but that could just be seen as "renaming" - a rather
poor attempt at reviving what essentially was a dead genre.

I don't believe in this 'dead genre' thing either. the idea
of 'genres' only exists in our heads, it's not like it
exists objectively. so maybe the idea of a genre you had
thought up doesn't apply anymore for yourself, in other
words, you have lost interest in how you defined a genre,
but the music still exists, the music is still being made.

it's just such a silly thing to say - 'the genre is dead'.

that said, I want to say that I'm one of the few people who
do not mind Warp taking their current route. not to say I
like everything they sign at the moment, but I listen to
music, not to a fucking label. if I see what they're doing,
I certainly still get the feeling they are doing what they
want, like they always have.

you can't deny horror films as a genre, especially splatter
films, a subgenre like idm.

genre films, genre books (detective, romance, etc) and yes,
genre music. romance novels are for lonely girls and fantasy
novels are for lonely boys; they're afraid of fine
literature, as it rarely produces the escapism they require.
generally, idm is for those too afraid of being labeled for
listening to a particular style of actual music; you don't
call someone a glitchster for listening to the washing
machine noises and three note nintendo melodies of the idm
catalogue. you're apprehensive of calling them pretentious,
because it's too strange and dorky. you're apprehensive
about calling them dorks, because the style is alien and
impenetrable. it's a genre of its own, derived from
electronica, and devoid of even the simplistic humanities of
booty shaking beats inherent in other forms of the
electronic music style.

basically, everyone who listens to idm -- and a lot of them
had to condition themselves to it first -- is trying too
hard.

why is this gravenhurst released on warp? I really don't
get, no elctronics, mostly a acoustic gitar and some vocals
and that's it, I don't get it..

I have both of Gravenhurst's releases on mini-disc, they are
gorgeous, the guy is a talent. My favourite songs are
probably 'Tunnels', 'Meet The Family' and 'Hopechapel
Hill'...although they are all great.

I said that I thought warp were trying too hard by signing
him in the past... but I listened to the album last night
and It Is Good. I was wrong.

horrible, horrible name for an acoustic song.
