 | It is so interesting that such a big number of IDM fans are depressed or on drugs or both..

Or so it seems from neetta's thread....

Somehow it's very appropriate... I am not sure why I think
 that...

 | The only drug I take with any sort of regularity is alcohol. I keep even that in comparative moderation these days though
(I drink strong stuff- just not very often). I'm certainly
not depressed. I was in my late teens, but I think most
people are. I grew out of it and taught myself to be happy.

 | Yeah, I felt bad for a couple of years solid, despite everything in my life being comparatively peachy, but I
eventually overcame it through self-mastery/control. You
know what really does my box? When people who are still
depressed or who use drugs as crutch say that I
wasn't depressed- simply on the grounds of me getting
myself out of it and not going to anyone for help.

I was reading the other week in one of the broadsheets about
a revolutionary new treatment for depression some shrink had
developed. In simple terms 2 things: Firstly, it's yuor
problem, only you can fix it. Giving people the indulgent
"it's not your fault, it's chemicals in your brain" attitude
doesn't help people out of their depression. Reducing it to
a chemical level and not factoring in free will means we
also shouldn't punish criminals and that we shouldn't take
responsibility for our actions. Secondly, stay busy-
depression is least prevalent in times when people are
working a lot or enduring hardship (look at suicide rates in
WW2, much much lower than in times of prosperity). By
working (and by that it can be almost anything- studying, an
actual job, even just doing music in a really applied
manner) you free yourself of the periods of "dead time"
where you sit around and mope, which is when you get into
that spiral of sitting around more, getting more depressed
 etc.

These are both things I realised for myself a few years
 back.

 | well i am happy to hear you got yourself out of it. But many people can't do that for numerous reasons.

Also, given that I'm into sociology, I don't buy into the
ultimate significance of biological theories for these
things. Genetic predisposition maybe there but I think often
enviromental factors play a huge role to trigger it. Also I
read some stuff on some mental health illnesses where
there's debate around whether the chemical imbalances are
the 'result' rather than cause of the problem.

Also, saying that enviromental factors play a big role in
this does not mean I'm saying it is still very difficult to
deal with and get out of. You don't need screwed up
chemicals in your head to be screwed up. Enviromental
pressures can build things up in people that makes them feel
they cannot control their lives or themselves. Social
 construction is very powerful.

 | "Also I read some stuff on some mental health illnesses where
there's debate around whether the chemical imbalances are
the 'result' rather than cause of the problem."

Spot on- that's one of my arguments: there is no
satisfactory way of proving that they are not simply a
physical manifestation of the way the brain is "behaving"
 (due to environmental factors).

Also, you might laugh, but I'm religious and I find the idea
of there being no "soul" or true conciousness in a body
unpalatable. If we really are just bags of chemicals,
morality really goes out the window and the future really is
pre determined etc. which as well as being not something I
believe, it's not something that I think would be good to
know, even if it were true (people already act like twats,
imagine what they'd get up to if they could hide behind the
fact there was no free will). Paradoxically, such a
discovery (and by that I mean real, irrefutable proof- not
just philosophers touching on it) would actually greatly
 alter peoples behaviour.

 | I drink way too much, and I smoke way too much weed. I very rarely do class A drugs.

I think it's more that people who post on boards and usenet
and stuff a lot are on average more fucked up than
the average person in the street, rather than IDM fans in
particular. The fact that IDM has quite a strong presence on
the net could lead you to the assumption that it's IDM in
 particular, granted.

 | Yeah, you should see some of the gimps from the Muse board my old flatmate (who was a mod there) used to bring to the
flat. Right bunch of misfits, makes us look normal ;)

 | Yeah, cause and effect go out the window when you're talking about brain chemistry really. There are many different types
of chemical cascades that can occur in the brain. In other
words self-catalysing reactions where more and more of a
 chemical is generated.

 | i won't laugh..i know lots of religious people and come from a religious family

except people can pretty much refute any irrefutable proof
for anything! it's the 'beauty' of the human brain..., it
can always find ways to disagree...

 | I agree about the keeping busy bit though, I think that helps.

I guess the first bit would probably work well for passive
sufferers, as in the ones who don't attempt to get better
because of their negativity. However I think there is a
completely different type of sufferer who acknowleges their
responsibility and works bloody hard to get their life back
on track - say those who have have been bereaved. They may
have periods of recovery and success as a result of their
positive thinking, but I think it would be extremely
dangerous and plain wrong to 'place the blame' of any
relapse on the sufferer. I think that could only decrease
their self esteem at a time when they need more to move on.
Hmm it has got me thinking that one
