Where to start ? It’s gonna be difficult to describe what we’ve heard from Richard d James last night (& saw from plastician Stephane Coville). Imagine 3 or 4 huge rooms at the parisian museum of modern art, with 54 speakers all over the place and a big white cube made of sheets at the center, against the main wall. Inside the cube…Err…aphex & sound designer Gwen Courtois, but you could not see anything. We expected, as written on the prog, some ambient works but it was something else. It started with acousmatic sounds, very close to Robert Normandeau pieces, his early pieces (le cap de la tourmente) or ina/grm (Patrick Ascione) . But a very dark Normandeau.
I had forgotten how sounds could be scary. Kind of heavy metal stuff in a way… For a moment you could hear some ambient « trax » or sounds. Wonderful. A bit like the track 2 from drukqs CD2, but more « fucked up », treated. At some time, i thought about Ryuichi Sakamoto experiments with computers/synths. If the audience seemed delighted by all those speakers all over the place, they were also upset ‘cause you could not see aphex, hidden inside his big white cube. The music stop for a moment & someone from the «
Palais de Tokyo » (the museum) gave us kind of explanations / warnings : please don’t smoke, don’t touch the pieces of art in the gallery, & wait for aphex to « reveal » himself inside the white cube. At this moment, many people were sitting around the cube, waiting for something to happen. And it came, after the warm up sounds, came the evil flood. I’m not smart enought to describe everything i heard, so forgive my « name droping » : imagine aphex remixing/ editing Farmersmanual’s 3 days dvd in 3 hours. A crosser over of : Hecker, Pita, Mego sounds, lots of weird sounds (60’s sounds like Pierre Henry), bit of Ligeti (think of the Jupiter scene, in 2001), lots of voices treatments (not far from steve reich & well done), some kind of orchestral sounds and lots of smojphace madness at irresponsible sound level. The afx noises were pretty hardcore. T

... Then came, slowly, some really nice & melodic sounds. Not far from the track Pir from Autechre, or some mindblowing cello sounds, treated sounds –think js Bach, cello suites, but « treated », like wood turning to plastic…I heard lots of ‘so-called’ noise music from mego, but never with this amounts of details, with this precision. Obviously, Aphex did care about his audience. At the core of the stage, 2 or 3 guys were cuting the cube to reveal it was not one « cube » covering aphex & his machines, but 3 layers of sheets. Slowly, they cut loads of pieces of sheets. The result was pretty strong, if it didn’t not reveal Richard James, it turned the cube in some kind of spider web, organic stuff. Above the destroyed cube were white scultptures of stars, moving sculptures with lights inside of it. Lots of projections on the wall. Abstract pictures, dark & blue. To look at this & to listen to those fucking sounds was mindblowing. I thought about the last scenes of 2001 (white cube, instead of black object) from which came those terrific sounds. The climax of the happening, for i, was when Aphex put one of my favorite track : « aguirre » main theme by Popol Vuh. This masterpiece, that recall unforgettable moments (Klaus Kinsky, at the heart of darkness), put all over the place, with speakers everywhere…
It was breathtaking. It ended with some punk remixed track & then stop. As you could not see much what was happening inside the cube, i had a look at one of the corner of the wall/sheets, to see Richard James, just behind the sheets, pretty protected & hidden at the left of the cube, still working on his machines. Told a mate to have a look, felt a bit guilty about it, then we leave. During the show, i had the feeling that this white volcano of sound was Aphex Twin best piece to date. The morning after, i still think his best output have yet to come.

found this on a french forum, it doesn't give justice at all to the live set because from 54 speakers to a quite average recording there is a long way, but it's better than nothing:
(it's mostly noise bits)

more comments: http://www.xsilence.net/forum-167ll15265l0.htm review of the aftershow, that same night
(if you do not read french its says: afx in good mood but technical problems for 30 minutes & lots of people did not get in, good mix of old brit techno played by afx + electroacoustic fx by his mate gwen jamois)
another review: http://www.lesinrocks.com/DetailArticle.cfm?iditem=164294
i'm not surprised of not seeing any photos; the last time i saw afx in paris (dec 2002), loads of pictures were taken + rephlex guy (i think) with hancycam & but i never saw any of theses.
maybe i should send an email to rephlex asking for 120 minutes of afx 'acousmatic/noise' madness on cd...?

you're right about the acousmatic influence in the early part.
i don't think the recording will ever be released as it was an improvisation but there was talk of it been played at some point on resonance fm out of london - but i think this is unlikely. what i do know is Afx & Gwen were very happy and will do it again.
