Let's see.
Windowlicker isn't exactely groundbreaking.
It doesn't bring a new genre to the table.
But let's see just why it's so fuking good.
I dunno, the switching the breakdowns.
It's all somewhat classic and easy to rock into.
Thought?

so you're referring to the track, not the album I gathered from your "uuuuuuuuuuh haf huuuehhhhaaaaaaaah" post.
It is groundbreaking, in terms of converting imagination into sound. I keep forgetting that the video is on the cd. There are also sounds that noone else has exactly duplicated or mimiced well.

Also the quality of the voice especially the way the volume is organized, getting much louder at certain parts is excellent. I love that track. Aphex is a master at his neurotic craft.

"nuances" is the perfect word for windowlicker's genius, ignoring the fact that what's "genius" in art is subjective among the human species, not to mention almost all other species don't give the slightest damn about the aesthetics of windowlicker, such as cockroaches.

That was funny to me. It seemed like a parody of michael jackson... hmm who was a child molester... and probably so is aphex. I think I'm on to some sort of hidden easter egg here.

what really does it for me is imagining all the samples he started out with, like a really shitty grab bag of random barely-compatible lego parts sprawled on the floor, and the fucking monument he built with it. that's ingenuity.

I also used to note Autechre's vi scose poise off Confield as the first track I've ever heard that sounds like someone whipping a spoon or something around in a bowl.
That whispy circular sound.
Then I noticed Windowlicker actually uses it. 23seconds and on.

Shit, I don't even know if aphex is restricted to the paradigm of "samples" like the majority of imitative software users. I think it's track 3's melody on the RDJ album.. the quality of that thing baffles me how he created it. It seems analogue, like some real instrument was used or something, albeit a very weird instrument.

I don't know about this track. For me the vocals are bit repetitive. I could do with a vocal-less version. That being said the breakdown is really nice and funky, this track has some really nice techniques too like the beat flipping, start-stop style like he used on the energy box remix. SICK SICK. Also the 'crappy' track, it was better before.

Windowlicker is probably my favorite aphex track. Really amazing what he did. How can you not like that bass sound? The analogue snare, the breathy vocals on top of that growl. Also, the editing is insane. Love it.

I think that track was very inovative (and the whole EP). I wish he would have continued in the same direction but noooooo . I wonder if he will ever release anything fantastic again , something that makes you go wow! like you used to.

Windowlicker is soo lame, a bunch of weird sounds and a really weak backing melody. It´s obvious that the track is lacking something when you have to throw in so much extra noices and weird stuff to make it work a bit better.
The classic aphex-stuff didn´t need all weirdness - it was awesome on it´s own. Like "cockoo" (track 3 on AB 4), "flim" and countless others. A never example of something awesome with annoying fill-out-sounds is "avril 14th", that track is really something.

I actually feel a little uncomfortable listening to it, since one of the fundamental components is a mess of sensual groans.. but the execution is fucking glorious.
