or are you an original album obessed seaker?
for example:
do you like the fact that you can get almost all caustic window eps in one cd?
or things like nothing records joining tri repetae with two eps, or rdj album with girl boy ep
or on contrary you prefer to have the separate releases cos you think that joining some of those break the spirit or mood of the original artist´s intentions.
what would you rather have 26 mixes for cash or all the cds and vinyls where those mixes were originally?
I personally like compilations like classics or caustic window or even 26 mixes for cash because:
they are very well put together, and almost sound like a coherent album
they have tracks that are almost impossible to get right now, if not impossible for me as I dont have turntable.
but I dont like compilations that join an album with an ep or more cos an album is more like an entity on its own and if you add tracks to it, you break some of the ocncepts on it.
though people could think that it could happent to a compilation of eps too...
well what do you think?
and of course, I dont like greates hits compilations, 99% of the times they dont have the greatest hits I consider

seperate, but in the case of caustic window, I'll take that since the others are so hard to find

Iv e got two reasons to buy a compilation; it depends on who's on the compilation: for example; the latest compi. i bought was zen mix, cause of the squarepusher mixes.
the other reason to buy a compilation; to discover for me unknown artists, but if I discover a new artist, I prefer the original stuff

Well, being a completist and having everything exactly as it originally was is nice, but pragmatically that is never going to happen--money, time, and distribution problems really get in the way.
For example I'd rather have garbage + avil vapre + tri repetae instead of tri repetae++, however
1) I bought tp++ this semester, and can't find garbage or anvil
2) it costs less this way 3) less time finding tracks by grabbing the bundle.

Yep! i loove Compilations.
Its a great way to discover new bands/artists and music styles.
Like the Trojan box sets for example have helped me explore the musical treasure of Jamaica , inside each box is a little pamflet with a history (lesson) of the music and artists.
While on the subject , does anyone know of any good compilation with Japanese experimental electronic music ?
I love the style of Aoiki Takamasa etc..

In the case of it being rare and/or unknown artists and tracks on the compilation, I highly endorse it.
However I dont like the fact that compilations, as nacmat said, break a certain mood or just have no mood whatsoever.

I like, though I'd like to have maybe the originals too, oh i want it all. I'd really like an original copy of "The Philosophy of Sound and Machine" ART/Rephlx compilation, that has some of the greatest "idm" moments available to humanity.

They're great for single artist rare compilations, but greatest hits compilations are only any good if you don't like the artist enough to buy all the albums. Muti artist compilations are good to find new artists, but I find boring to listen to after a while because you only end up liking a few tracks.

I like label compilations, or compilations from a particular genre. This helps someone who may not know much about the music to quickly get up to speed.
That stuff about squeezing a bunch of albums from the same artist on one cd is stupid.

I love compilations. The latest one I picked up was the Rough Trade Shops, Post Punk 01 double cd jam packed with good stuff.
As far as compilations that focus on just one artist, I enjoy those too. If the artist okay'd it, then they don't mind if those songs are listened to out of context. I used to think of it as cheating or as not being a true fan or whatever, but I don't care about that stuff anymore. The last thing I want to be is an obsessive Aphex Twin nerd who has everything because it impresses nobody except other obsessive Aphex Twin nerds. At the end of the day, collecting 26 seperate discs to get all of what's on 26 Mixes For Cash is simply impractical.
