YES! if all goes well, i'm booking a flight this week (reservation has been made).
when: 10th of june destination: Toronto duration: 2 weeks (too short, i know) the plan: to find a cheap car rental place, hire a car and drive to Montreal and back, seeing as much along the way as possible. (a nice balance of city sightseeing and exploring nature, national parks etc).
I'll be with 2 friends of mine, and the idea is to go backpacking/cruising around the ontario/quebec area.
I probably have no idea what i'm getting myself into, but i just tell myself thats part of the adventure.
However, i could WELL use some info regarding: - car rental: where? (not TO centre, i know that much) - campsites: know any good ones? - (youth) hostels: in toronto and montreal. The idea is to spend as little money on this kind of thing as possible.
- parties, gigs, concerts, festivals: i heard the montreal scene has some good stuff going on. Stuff i'd love to experience amongst a cool canadian audience (wow that sounds horribly weird): techno (uk, detroit techno. No paul oakenfold-ish stuff please), drum & bass, IDM, electro, acid, etc..)
- record stores (prefferably ones like amoeba in san francisco, if thats even possible)
- alcohol: where to get the cheapest beer (i dont care if it tastes like piss, as long as it can still be considered beer)
- what to avoid, where not to go.
well you get the idea. theres another few million things i should know but any info at all would be a good start. I'm browsin through the lonely planet guide to toronto as well but some stuff might be outdated.
i cant waiiiiiiiiiittttt.........

in ontario you can only buy alchohol from government run stores...... The Beer Store (for beer) and the LCBO (for wine and harder alchohol, and beer too)
in quebec, i think, you can buy alchohol anywhere like in the U.S., so prices will actually be different

i think ive been to rotate this or soundscapes, but thats it.. except for other small record stores but i dont know their names
i dont buy records though so i dont know from experience how good these places are
a big drum n bass head and dj friend of mine is always talking about Eastern Bloc as the place for jungle/drum n bass, and someone wtih the largest record colleciton ive ever heard of (13000 records) highly recommended Soundscapes, and i would trust his opinion (Soundscapes isn't really for electronic music though)
.... damnit i should have just spun a cooler sounding lie
_ if you want free parties, check out FreeTekno... usually in outdoors or in weird locations, pretty hardcore crowd
if you want to party with cool canadians you might find some there
also, if you want to see some very classic north american culture you might want to check out a Blue Jays game at the Skydome (enormous convertable-roof stadium right next to the CN tower)
frankly baseball is pretty boring, but if you have enough beer it could be fun
its more of a relaxed, chat with drunk friends while you watch the game thing, and its a big thing in north american culture (more america than canada though)...
and its dirt cheap, tickets start at like $6..... and on tuesdays i think they're $2
btw the CN tower definitely has an insane admission fee..... dont remember what exactly but im sure you can find it on the net
OH that reminds me, if you dont mind paying $40+ to get into an amusement park, check out canada's wonderland...... some great roller coasters, but go earlier in the day to avoid huuuuuuuuuuuuge lineups to get on them
if you go early, you can just ride over and over again cus youre the only ones there
food etc is pretty expensive inside, and its an amusement park so theres probably not much to entertain someone your age except for the roller coasters and maybe the waterpark

When in Montreal check out Casa Del Popolo - they have a schedule online with concerts and shit.
Two of our alternative weeklies are online here: the Mirror and the Hour - that should give you an idea of where the night life is and what's happening.
other fun things in Montreal:
Chinatown
Old Montreal
the whole Plateau area with all its shops and bars and restaurants and subbacultcha - yes, even visit the tam-tam on sunday if you don't mind hippies. If you do go to the tam tam take time to walk up the long winding road to beaver lake atop Mount Royal (really just a big hill)

It's a vast sea of humans, many of them playing drums and hacky sack and frisbee and shit. Many or most of them are hippie-ish, including the highest concentration allowed by law of cute little French hippie chicks in halter tops and tank tops. Blankets are spread out, food and crafts are sold, there are some cops but they look the other way unless you're shooting heroin in your scrotum.

I suggest you try to make it to a Calgary Flames home game before the playoffs are over, then you'll get an idea of just how rabidly berserk we become over hockey. You'll never see the ''Real Canada'' unless you do.
I don't know much about beers, but I do know that I've always liked Alexander Keith's commercials. So if I was a drinker, I'd go for that. It's all about the commercials, man!

TheThirdBall's Guide To Montreal -------------------------------------- 1. Food
Montreal smoked meat - this should be consumed at Schwartz's deli ONLY! (On Boul. St. Laurent about a block above Ave Des Pins) If you eat smoked meat anywhere else, I cannot be held responsible.
Montreal Bagels - there are two competing shops - both in the same neighbourhood. I guess you'll have to try both of them out. First off is St. Viateur Bagel - on you guessed it, St. Viateur street just east of Avenue Du Parc. Some prefer Fairmount Bagel which is just a couple blocks south of St. Viateur on Fairmount.
Poutine - this delicious treat should be consumed at La Belle Province (various locations) or LaFleur (St. Denis just above Sherbrooke). Don't fear the curds.
2. Nightlife Montreal Shows - This is a link to the Montreal shows messageboard which will list almost all the small shows going on.
One thing you'll learn very quickly is that this city fucking loves house music. House music is okay but.... come on I need a little variety.
Wednesday - Dub Lounge at Blizzarts (on Boul. St. Laurent just below Duluth). Some of the best dub reggae you've ever heard. Ladies are out in full effect. Down some pints, sit back and relax. Things get moving around midnight.
Friday - Jungle at Blue Dog (right next door to Blizzarts). Amazing ragga jungle with MCs. Fuckin' love it.
I would also make sure to check out: Bily Kun - Mont Royal just West of St. Denis Edgar Hypertaverne - Mont Royal just W of Papineau Foufounes Electriques - punk club with a different vibe each night. Legendary spot. (St. Catherine just East of St. Laurent)
Pub St. Elizabeth - on Rue St Elizabeth (just East of Foufounes and then make a left) - the best patio in the city. Monday nights they have $3 (1.8039 Euro) pints.
3. Other shit Old Montreal Oratoire St. Joseph Strip Clubs Mont Royal itself
Hopefully that helps. Enjoy your stay. TheThirdBall
