anyone going to see it? i'm still not sure, kind of gone
off hollywood recently.

Well they've changed the source material for a start.

Nowhere in the book is Achilles romping with 5 women. Yet
that's apparently in the film. I'm all for 6 in a bed
action but not at the expense of a films integrity and
changing the characters sexuality. That's just ONE thing.
But it's the most interesting.

i don't think it'll be much more than massive battleish eye
candy.

Nah. It had some terrible reviews in the UK press but
apparently it's not too bad (slow first hour then heats up)
but three hours in the cinema plus a dodgy Pitt accent =
wait for it on Sky. Plus, I dunno if I can handle yet
another bloody massive CGI army fight...

yeh... fuck "Troy" - get your chops around some "King
Arthur" action by that master film-maker, jerry brucheimer,
out in June. i'm in it so it has to be good!

i bet when i see Troy i'll crack up laughing at the
horse-gift bit, thinking of Monty Python and the Holy Grail

suppose. It's a shame they do things like that though.

I heard that Eric Bana(The Incredible HULK! RARRRRRRRR!) is
the only reason to see this film. I read a review that said
he steals the movie from Brad Pittstain.

Excalibur is the only "King Arthur" flick imo. If you
haven't seen it, rent it or better yet buy it and see it
ASAP. It is a wonderful movie.

Leonard Maltin said it was a REALLY good movie, praised Pitt
and Bana AND the battles. But Maltin has weird googly eyes
so I don't trust him.

character near the end.

oh yeh and two words... Helen Mirren!!!

i'm definately not seeing it at the cinema, looks way too
hollywood. The only film worth looking forward too is the
likely Cannes winner '2046' by Wong Kar Wai.

check out "Twilight Samurai" too. It got nominated for best
foreign film at Oscars and is my film-of-the-year. i thionk
its being released generally soon although it may be avail
on DVD from Japan.

best sword-action ever filmed! Not gratuitous or anything.
Full of pathos a la Kurasawa and the best acting in ages...

I'm very interested in this. Wonder if they worked from the
Robert Fagles translation? It's a relatively literal
translation that doesn't attempt to force it into English
style poetic form.

Funny thing is I took a course on the Iliad and we were
discussing who'd play who in the movie version, and when
someone suggested Brad Pitt as Achilles we all had a good
laugh. :D I understand he had a body double for some scenes
because his legs were too skinny even after bulking up.

Interesting (I think) that these kind of "Epic" movies
(Gladiator, Master&Commander, Troy) used to be the main
currency in Hollywood for a long time. They only stopped
making them because the huge sets & thousands of extras cost
too much i comparison to the box office returns.
Only now, thanks to CGI are they resurrecting these
"Classic" genres. It's funny how a step forward in
cenematographic technology has allowed film-makers to take a
step backwards in subject matter.
Still, I'd rather they used CGI to try and expand reality
than to create tacky showpieces. It's nice to see that
horrible 90s boy-with-a-new-toy fad of producing dire movies
as an excuse to bring an amateur, unconvincing CGI creature
to the screen as if to dazzle people. As though we're ALL
that stupid. I've been waiting for them to get over the
novelty of the power that digital technology has unlocked
for the cinema. As far as I'm concerned, CGI ought to be
used to integrate impractical elements into the 'reality' of
film; rather than to stand out from it like a sore thumb.
Although I haven't seen it yet, films like Troy (along with
Lord of the Rings & the others I mentionned) represent a
step towards this.

troy is crap. it's like a bad rip-off of those classic
hollywood flicks, but with a large budget. a budget which
gives you scenes like a camera shot flying over the city
wall while seeing the greeks fight the troyians, all in
chique slowmotion of course, and no sounds but the
melancholic singing of a female voice. did i say lord of the
rings?
and achilles' deathscene. it's hard to describe what it was
that made me wonder which scene was worse: achilles' death
or trinity's death in matrix3?
wooops, i hope i didnt spoil the story or anything

you'll like troy if you missed brad pitt in action while
watching lotr.
