Are you saying it's not very good and that IDM is over, or that it's so good it supplants IDM? I haven't heard it but to me it sounds like white boy label with high shit quotient wants to release rude boy legitimate black music, perhaps, misguidedly, when there are lots of labels already for "that sort of music" that aren't so "arch".

I have always been into drum and bass, then in 96 or whatever Speed Garage started which was like dirty bass lines with minimal beats over the top. Unfortunately the media latched onto it with the likes of So Solid Crew and other shit like that and UK Garage as it started to be called mostly turned shit as everyone wanted a commercial hit. Obviously the non commercial scene carried on (same as drum and bass) and seems to be making a bit of a resurgence thanks to Rephlex's interest. Whether there motives are shitty or not, provided it gives exposure to the proper scene I am all for it.
The other thing I would like to point out is this whole black music thing...I don't get where that comes from. If anything the Drum and Bass and Garage scenes are two of the most multicultural forms of music that exist, with roots in music from both cultures. Why do people always want to classify music racially?
Sorry that was a bit wordy.

I agree the whole Grime thing is gimmicky, but Rephlex seem to have become rather good at low budget marketing, and they couldn't just call it "the way UK Garage used to sound when it was good"

I genuinely hope it is an earnest to promote one of the few areas of the modern UK music scene that is innovative.
I wonder about Rephlex's influence though, outside of the "fans". Again, I hope it does kick music up the arse, i would like for them to be relevant again.

Yep, re: the race issue... unlike hip hop and garage, none of my black mates like dnb and you rarely see black kids at dnb gigs. I really don't get why it's seen as "black music", aside from its obvious roots in jungle/dancehall ragga.
As Afrika Bamabatta says, "it's all about the breaks, and the breaks have no colour- the drummers in the breaks we use are black and white, so the music has no colour."

A lot of the drum and bass nights I went to when I lived in Sheffield where a mixture of white, black and asian...everyone just having a good time. The media decided drum and bass was black because of Goldie, Roni Size, Grooverider and Fabio. They based the entire scenes racial identity on four prominent people. Then the whole tech step stuff came in, and to be fair it did loose it's vibe and Garage picked that up.
I think a lot of underground UK scenes tend to be class based rather than race based...and it's a pity the media don't seem to recognise it. I thought the BBC had with 1Xtra - which was supposed to be a national "urban radio station", until they shitted out and fucking changed it to the UK's first national black music station. Wasted opportunity.

For me drum and bass/jungle are and will always be the same thing. The same way as rap/hip hop are the same thing (I am referring to the vocal element of hip hop before anyone gets all KRS1 on me)...I don't see the point in genre splitting for the sake of it.

ever been to a rave? from my experience black people seem to like the more complicated beats, i.e. hip hop, jungle, ragga, dagga, magga, etc...
whereas most white kids that i knew in the detroit plur scene only liked house i.e.
mm tss mm tss ,trance mm tss clap tss and happy hardcore mtsclaptsmtsclaptsmts
sorry to point this out WHITEY but white people prefer simpler beats- black people usually look for stuff with shuffle, just look at the roots of jazz
... i'm just kidding- if you wanna say a certain color of people makes something, fine you're wrong.
a certain color of people LIKES something? you're not just wrong

Yes, but IDM has it's roots in Techno (It used to be called "Listening Techno" or "Art Techno"), which is seen as "black music", but I think the majority of people would agree IDM is now seen as "white music".

dizzee does come from the grime/dubstep scene, it's the east london sound. dirty two step with big nasty distorted bass drums and bass lines.
wiley (dizzee's mate) calls it eskimo beat, or eskibeat for short. presumably cos it's cold, dark shit.
anyone else a bit disappointed by wiley's album (treddin' on thin ice)? not up to the standard of dizzee's exceptionally good boy in da corner.

Err.. no.
I'm talking about the instrumental stuff. Most of what I've heard up to this point is solely instrumental, perhaps with the odd vocal snippet or old dancehall sample.
Sure, it's condusive to having an MC ad-lib over the top, but it's not essential. Personally, when it comes to MCs, I find they work well in a club environment; but that they lack spontanaeity & impact on record.
Hence my impatience with rap & with guest vocalists on d&b tracks.
Oh, and Ibiza is all about commercial house music & trance.. not so much rap.
Better luck next time though, eh?

Been listening to the full thing now... really good stuf. It has a certain tension to it due to the comparatively slow tempo, every pause you expect it to come into a double timed dnb sort of percussive breakdown and it only happens in some of the tracks.

Umm, yeah.
Ibiza will be playing whatever you'll want to call Grime, mark my words. Just like Ibiza made room for prog and garage. The UK trends will have their days in the sun and the soon-to-be-born Grime massive will be all the rage for about 12 to 24 months.
I've seen this kind of thing before, so ease up a bit, alright? You don't have to be sole protector of UK trendiness, I was just taking the piss a bit...

It doesn't matter one bit. I think maybe you guys are interpreting nastiness in my tone when it was more mirthfulness that I was aiming for.

Woah, hold on a minute..
I left the office for the day and missed all of this. Have a sense of humour; I wasn't as irate as you might have interpreted.
There's no hate here either. There's nothing wrong with people dancing to whatever they want on any island they choose to visit; but they'd have had a better chance of hearing rap & garage on ayia napa than ibiza. Bring on the mirth; we need a little more of that, there's too much music snobbery around. "Grime" isn't a new thing, it's been around under one name or another for years now. And I hardly see it being a national trend, so far it's been pretty localised. It's only lately that it's been getting much exposure. It's not really accessible enough to make a whole country (even one as small & tightly knit as ours) dance in our castles.
Besides, there's nothing wrong with living on a trendy island. We have to give something back to the rest of the world now that our empire's collapsed.. And we definitely need something to distract us from the shit weather here!
Spread Love.
