I think the 1GB will need a new one but your old minidiscs
can be reformatted to the new type and still work in your
odl one. Someting like that.

Hello - this is known in the md community since january...
:P

HiMD is a improvement but has still got some stupid drm
unfortunately... old md´s will play on the new md-units or
you can reformat your old md´s so more music will fit on
them. Pogo is quite right in a way - HiMD units does not
play mp3 directly, recompression is needed before playing.

HiMD allows the user to use a md as a floppy disc to store
data on them, but it seperates "music" & "data" - so to
store mp3´s is alright, but not directly playing them...
(Sony must stop this drm-junk, HiMD needs ALL usual
mp3-player features otherwise it´s pretty doomed (more than
it already is))

HiMd allows 1 h 28 min recording of PCM 44.1/16 bit (=CD
quality sound) and this can be uploaded to a windows PC -
that´s the only real strong advantage of HiMD that I can
see.

Md´s are great for sample-hunting and live-concert
recording, I´ve been using two sonys since 98. They´re
rugged and wellbuilt and works always great, which is
ecspecially important in some live-situations. But for the
future I will need a MAC-compatible recorder/uploader and
HiMD does not offers this at the moment.

General computermedia as CDR/W, DVDR/W and Harddrives are
alot cheaper than md-media and offers, because of the ease
of fast copying, almost as good storage. (md´s cartridge
design and MO discs ruggedness can´t really be beaten
though!) Solidstate compact Flash media recording with easy
uploading is something I´m investigating for future
recording projects. (Marantz & Tascam has some interesting
stuff going on in this field) Sony´s DRM stuff is something
I can live without.

www.minidisc.org
(a great site with all you need for portable
recording/uploading - with or without md)

www.minidisc.org has lots of info and a messageboard with
minidisc NUTS who discuss way more than you probably want to
know

the site also has an informative FAQ and specs of HiMD and
all the HiMD models, which, btw, have been delayed

the cheapest one, which cannot record audio from a mic
(upload from computer only) is shipping soon, but everything
above that model is delayed until.........
MID
to LATE
J U L Y

far after my birthday
ill have to sue sony for this

i was planning on buying one soon (ill probably wait till
they're finally introduced) so ive done more reading than
i'd like to admit about them...... if anyone has questions
i'd be honoured to answer them

The prices of MD players have come down, so they need HiMD
to have a reason to jack up the prices again.
